A physical cartridge of a first-party Switch 2 game has leaked again. Five days before the Zelda: Ocarina of Time release date, pre-order buyers are showing off their purchases. If the remake boots without an update, spoilers that solve any remaining mysteries about the remake could emerge.

While Nintendo tries to avoid leaks, supporting physical Switch 2 games introduces risks. The Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake release date isn’t until November 5th, but a buyer has already obtained a boxed copy. Fans may encounter unofficial footage or spoilers, as with past first-party titles.

Another careless retailer?

Nintendeal shared that stores have begun receiving stacks of the Zelda title. Followers can see the case's spine, which features gold lettering. The social media post also contains a photo of a gamer leaving a location after picking up their Ocarina of Time pre-order. It’s now known that the cartridge is red, rather than the gold color of the N64 classic’s initial batch.

Retailers generally aren’t allowed to let customers collect purchases before street dates. Still, lucky buyers often take home Switch 2 games or accept early deliveries. With Donkey Kong Bananza, screenshots and videos surfaced days ahead of its July 2025 release date. Players also accessed a copy of Pokémon Legends: Z-A prematurely, though it was the original Switch version.

First-party PS5 discs, including Marvel’s Wolverine, have suffered similar leaks. Even so, there are no signs Nintendo plans a complete digital transition like its rival. Less desirable to collectors, Game-Key Cards require downloads. By contrast, the Zelda remake's data is entirely on a traditional cartridge.

Will Ocarina need a day-one patch?

It’s unknown whether a mandatory update will roll out on the Ocarina of Time release date. In that scenario, Nintendo can block physical pre-orders from launching. The recent Switch 2 jailbreak has thrown another wrinkle into the equation. Homebrew enthusiasts have been able to dissect files and even load games in emulators.

Hackers are making rapid progress, but they haven't extracted the console’s master encryption keys. That’s a roadblock to mass piracy and could shield the remake for now. If playable, unauthorized streaming and gameplay clips are the greatest threat.

Nintendeal noted spoilers likely wouldn’t be as devastating for Ocarina of Time. Besides modernizing the visuals and controls and adding voiceovers, the studio has mostly stayed faithful to the N64 original.
