Xiaomi has been facing some backlash over a somewhat ill-judged post on its UK Twitter account. Not only was the text and accompanying image criticized, but it also seems that the post, which was promoting the Xiaomi Mi 11, was actually sent from an iPhone. The Chinese OEM was comparing the Mi 11’s charging ability with the Gates’ recent split.

An unfortunate tweet from Xiaomi UK has been met with considerable derision due to its content, theme, included image, and the fact it was sent from a device from a rival company. While Xiaomi has had the sense to subsequently delete the post, plenty of Twitter users managed to screenshot the offending item, including noted tech writer Max Weinbach. The text of the post, which can be seen in the embedded image below, reads:

While breaking up with your billionaire partner might not be the smartest of choices our Mi 11 fully charges in 45 mins using 55 W wired turbo charging meaning you are always ready to leave.

Apart from the fact that the tweet was sent from an iPhone, clearly it wasn’t the wisest of decisions to compare the speedy charging capability of the Xiaomi Mi 11 with the divorce of Bill and Melinda Gates. Not only is the implication insulting (“might not be the smartest of choices”) but the accompanying graphic features a smartphone with the message “We need to talk” sent to a recipient called “Melinda”. In reality, some of the reported details about the high-profile split have focused on Melinda French Gates’ concerns about the company her husband had been keeping.

The latest cringe-worthy stunt from Xiaomi is not the first time the company has been caught out tripping over itself in one way or another. The OEM’s boss Lei Jun has been pulled up for using an iPhone while sending out social media messages and then there was the terrible advert posted on the Twitter account for Xiaomi Malaysia that suggested a cheating man should have used a Mi 9 SE to keep his infidelity secret from his partner. Perhaps Xiaomi should completely leave out the theme of relationships in future PR posts.
