Xiaomi Redmi AX5400: Router with decent features
The Xiaomi Redmi AX5400 is a high-performance router suitable for implementing a corresponding mesh system. The model can now be ordered in Europe, although the purchase is still subject to certain obstacles.

We already wrote about the Redmi AX5400 from Xiaomi quite a long time ago. It is a router that should also satisfy video gamers and users who want to set up a mesh system. The model is now available almost globally, but only unofficially. Specifically, the model can be ordered via Banggood or AliExpress at prices of around 80 to 100 euros. Depending on the retailer, delivery should take more or less time, with AliExpress, for example, offering delivery in just 10 days. VAT is to be paid by the retailer as part of the IOSS procedure however, returns are likely to prove extremely difficult, and compatibility is not necessarily guaranteed at the software level either.

The 241 x 182 x 228 millimeter router supports WiFi 802.11ax and should be able to operate in both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. The maximum data transfer rate in the 2.4 GHz band is specified as 574 MBit/s, in the 5 GHz band it should be 4,808 MBit/s. As usual, these figures only apply to optimum conditions that are almost impossible to achieve in practice. The four external antennas promise a high data transfer rate and connection quality even under less-than-ideal conditions. MU-MIMO and QFDMA are supported.

A Qualcomm IPQ5018 SoC and 512 megabytes of RAM are used, whereby up to 248 devices can be addressed simultaneously - at least according to the manufacturer. The equipment includes an Ethernet port with a maximum data transfer rate of 2.5 GBit/s, plus several connections with Gigabit speed. Two of the Ethernet ports can be used simultaneously by an end device for a higher data transfer rate. This could be useful, for example, when connecting a compatible network storage device.

A mesh system should be easy to set up with other compatible routers - the routers can be connected via Ethernet as well as wirelessly and in mixed forms. Improved data transmission for video games is promised thanks to corresponding prioritization, and Xiaomi smartphones should also benefit from exclusive acceleration. Control should be possible via an app, and RGB lighting is available.

Other routers from Xiaomi are not only available in this country as imports, but also regularly in stores.
