Semtech has announced the AirLink XR60, claimed to be the smallest rugged 5G router in the world. The system also comes with a GNSS module, which enables fleet monitoring, among other things.

Semtech claims that its Airlink XR60 is the world's smallest rugged 5G router, making it suitable for use in a number of areas. For example, it could be used in remote, industrial applications. Another area of application could be for monitoring of vehicles in which fast internet connections are made available on request, such as in coaches.

The 118 x 39 x 98 millimeter system weighs 522 grams and can be supplied with power via a round plug or USB-C. The model supports WiFi 6 with a theoretical maximum data transfer rate of 1200 MBit/s, as well as MIMO. Up to 32 clients can be connected at the same time; the model operates simultaneously on the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands and thus promises strong data transmission quality.

The use of a VPN is supported. Depending on the model variant, either one Gigabit Ethernet port or two Ethernet ports are installed, with the second port supporting a data transfer rate of 5 GBit/s. A single GPIO port is also on board and AirLink OS is used as the operating system. Moreover, the purchase price includes five years worth of AirLink Complete, which itself is comprised of a hardware warranty, technical support and remote management. Lastly, a GNSS module is included.

Semtech advertises that the router is certified in accordance with MIL-STD-810H and IP64, meaning that the system is protected against humidity and vibration damage. The manufacturer is yet to specify a price; interested parties are advised to contact the manufacturer directly.

A possible alternative: Buy the GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 from Amazon.
