(Update2: Leaker predicts Zoom revolution, hints at dedicated AI chip) After the Google Pixel 8 and Samsung Galaxy S24, Xiaomi is now also explicitly advertising the power of artificial intelligence. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra is said to be the first manufacturer's smartphone with up to 60 TOPs of computational photography power for AI-based algorithms thanks to "Xiaomi AISP", for example, to significantly improve the zoom quality.

And it continues with the teasers around the Xiaomi 14 Ultra which launch is expected on February 22 in China and globally on February 25, 2024. After Xiaomi had already published a few shots from the Leica cameras of the new Leica flagship today, the first indications of another major focus at the launch of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra are now following.

Unsurprisingly, Xiaomi has apparently also discovered the topic of AI. After Google had already worked on the Pixel 8 and Samsung on the Galaxy S24 Ultra (available here on Amazon) with Galaxy AI, the number one tech topic of recent months, Xiaomi is now also following in the AI footsteps. The Chinese company is calling the whole thing "Xiaomi AISP", a collection of AI models designed to better combine hardware and software in order to advance computer-aided photography in particular.

Xiaomi AISP: Significant improvements with far-reaching zoom

In the machine-translated teasers, Xiaomi describes AISP as the first large-model-based computational photography platform that delivers up to 60 TOPs of performance. Xiaomi has already named four specific models: FusionLM, ToneLM, ColorLM, and PortraitLM. The whole thing sounds somewhat abstract, but Xiaomi is already demonstrating a concrete advantage with the comparison image below, which shows a 30x zoom shot with and without AISP support. The one optimized with AI-Power is of course much sharper and shows more details; the feature is apparently called "Ultra Zoom" and is currently still in beta.

Update February 20, 2024 5:40 p.m. Leaker provides evidence of dedicated AI hardware

The reference to the TOPS performance suggested earlier has now been confirmed by a leaker (see below): The Xiaomi 14 Ultra should have a special chip from Xiaomi, which is part of the AISP system. A few weeks ago, there were rumors about new Surge coprocessors in the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, so one of them could be responsible for the AISP platform.

Update February 21, 2024 09:30 a.m. Bold prediction from a leaker

According to a well-known leaker's prediction, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra will outperform all its competitors at zoom values of over 30x thanks to AISP. Accordingly, the zoom quality at 30x looks the same as traditionally at 10x magnification. Of course, it remains to be seen whether his announcement is accurate.
