First Android 15 preview build allegedly coming this week
Android 15 is expected to launch in the third quarter of 2024, although there is no official launch date to talke about yet. The internal codename it received brings back ice cream into the spotlight for the third time. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (2011) and Android 9 Pie (internally known as Pistachio Ice Cream and released in 2018) were the first two, but Android 12 and 12L, internally known as Snow Cone and Snow Cone v2, can be considered ice cream-themed releases as well.
While nothing is official yet, a developer posted on Google's Android Open Source Project website a message revealing that the first developer preview of the Android 15 mobile operating system would become available tomorrow, February 15th. Since this is a very early version, regular Android users have no reason to bother about it unless they're also developers. However, those adventurous enough can also grab this piece of code for a spin — at least as long as they have a compatible device.
Android 15 Vanilla Ice Cream will run on Google Pixel 6 (carrier unlocked 128 GB version, still available on Amazon, now at $347) and later devices. Its list of highlights isn't long yet, since the change log is far from its final form and not official yet. The leaks that made it online so far mention a Private Spaces feature, the return of Lock Screen widgets, as well as content under the navigation and status bars in full-screen apps.
