Modern smartphones can be difficult to set up and use for people who are not very familiar with technology. Google should make the detour via smartphones for seniors or feature phones unnecessary in the future and introduce an Easy Pre-set mode.

Android Authority was able to find references to a so-called "Easy Pre-set" mode in the code of the latest beta version of Android 14 QPR3. This mode is likely to be aimed primarily at older users who would otherwise use Android smartphones specially developed for senior citizens, such as Emporia devices. When this mode is activated, all text and icons are enlarged to make them easier to read.

Larger icons also make them easier to touch, which should help users navigate through the operating system. Increased contrast and thicker fonts round off the readability improvements of Easy Pre-set mode. To further support older users, the now widely used gesture control is replaced by the traditional navigation buttons. Android Authority was also able to confirm that this mode removes the background image of the home screen and replaces it with a simple black background.

It is not yet known whether this mode also simplifies the setup of a smartphone. However, Google could use it to replace the corresponding Android launcher and simplify the setup of smartphones for older users. It is currently unclear whether this feature will be released as part of the major Android 14 QPR3 update, which is expected in June, or together with Android 15 between August and September. The first developer preview of Android 15 should be released by March at the latest, so more details on Google's plans should be revealed shortly.
