Volkswagen has announced that it will electrify the Scout brand with two new models. The all-electric pickup and rugged SUV (R-SUV) will be released in the US, with production scheduled to begin in 2026. Prototypes of the vehicles are expected to be unveiled next year.
The company said that the EVs would be designed and manufactured in the US and “built upon a new technical platform concept”. Concept images were released alongside the announcement, suggesting that the vehicles could rival the Rivian R1T and R1S.
Volkswagen also stated that it would establish Scout as an independent company after acquiring the brand last year. In the statement, Volkswagen confirmed it is targeting a 10% stake in the US EV market and that R-SUV and pickup models would be vital to unlocking it.
The decision to revive the Scout brand was voted on earlier this month. Rumors started circulating about the vehicles last year when Motor Trend reported on comments from Johan De Nysschen, Volkswagen Group of America COO.
The article suggested that Volkswagen plans to set a starting price of US$40,000 for the R-SUV. This would be a far lower cost than the US$72,500 starting price of the Rivian R1S.
