Vaio launches laptops with 2.5K display, up to 64 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD and 18-hour battery

Vaio's new T series is now available to order in Japan, just over a week after the company announced the laptops. We covered the initial announcement on September 10.

The T series uses Vaio's multi-flip mechanism, allowing the display to switch between notebook, tablet and view modes. The Vaio T has a 13.3-inch 16:10 WQXGA touchscreen with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels. The recently updated Vaio SX14-R is also available with a 2560 x 1600 display, although it uses a larger 14-inch panel and a conventional clamshell design rather than a multi-flip mechanism. The Vaio T's display uses Vaio's flash surface touch display technology and has a glossy finish. 

Processor options include the Intel Core Ultra 5 325 and Core Ultra 7 356H. The Core Ultra 7 356H has 16 cores and 16 threads, compared with 8 cores and 8 threads on the Core Ultra 5 325. We recently compared the two processors across 29 benchmarks, with the Core Ultra 7 356H scoring 100% compared with 78% for the Core Ultra 5 325.

The Vaio T comes with 16 GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 512 GB SSD as standard. The Core Ultra 5 325 model supports up to 32 GB of memory, while the Core Ultra 7 356H model supports up to 64 GB. Storage can be selected with up to a 2 TB PCIe 5.0 SSD.

Vaio offers a high-capacity battery as an optional upgrade. With this battery installed, the company claims approximately 18 hours of video playback and up to 29 hours of idle time under the JEITA 3.0 measurement method. The high-capacity battery is listed as an optional 11,000-yen upgrade on the Vaio Store.

The Vaio T starts at approximately 2.76 lbs (1.253 kg) and measures 12.28 x 8.84 x 0.57–0.77 inches (312 x 224.6 x 14.6–19.6 mm). It is available in fine black and fine red.

For video calls and security, the laptop has a 9.2 MP camera with an AI vision sensor and support for Windows Hello facial recognition. Vaio also includes AI-based features such as noise cancellation and online meeting controls. Vaio WellnessCare is scheduled to provide camera-based vascular and heart-rate information from September 30.

Pricing and availability

Vaio T series (VCTNN1) orders are now open through the Japanese Vaio Store.

Pricing starts at 341,000 yen (about $2,176) including tax. The launch promotion cuts 33,000 yen (about $211) from the price and runs until December 1 at 9:59 a.m. Japan time. This entry-level configuration includes a Core Ultra 5 325, 16 GB of memory and a 512 GB standard SSD.

Vaio also offers a 512 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB fifth-generation high-speed SSD for an additional 38,500 yen (about $246), 110,000 yen (about $702) or 198,000 yen (about $1,264), respectively. A high-capacity battery costs another 11,000 yen (about $70), while an English keyboard layout adds 5,500 yen (about $35).

Vaio currently sells other laptops in international markets (Vaio FS 14 available on Amazon), but the company has not announced plans to bring the new T series outside Japan.
