Clement Wong, Huawei’s VP of Global Product Marketing, has confirmed that the upcoming Huawei P30 Pro will have a camera that offers periscope-style super-zoom capabilities. This confirmation has sparked speculation that the lens in question could actually be powered mechanically, enabling it to offer the rumored 10x optical zoom.
With MWC only recently ending, it seems strange that one of the year’s most exciting smartphone products has still to be officially revealed. We encountered many fascinating and frankly incredible devices at the Barcelona event, which included a sneak peek at a Huawei P30 Pro prototype. But it won’t be until March 26 that the Chinese company finally shows us the P30 and P30 Pro properly. No doubt the former will be an excellent smartphone, but the latter could end up being very special indeed.
It’s now been confirmed that the Huawei P30 Pro will have some sort of super-zoom ability, which was beautifully demonstrated not long ago when Huawei executive Richard Yu took a highly detailed snap of the moon. Unsurprisingly, Wong was not short of hyperbole in describing the P30 Pro’s prowess, apparently stating that the flagship smartphone's camera system will demonstrate “revolutionary technology to rewrite rules of photography.”
It is possible the Huawei P30 Pro could come with a powered mechanism to enable the super-zoom camera to carry out its super-zooming duties. The periscope-style technology for camera zoom isn’t a new idea: Oppo discussed the system back in 2017. But having a feature like a mechanical periscope-style 10x optical super-zoom camera would certainly help the P30 Pro stand out from the flagship crowd.
