Ubisoft is betting on a fresh shot at the MOBA market by acquiring Amazon Games Montreal and its in-development title March of Giants, a free-to-play “war MOBA” that has been running closed alpha tests on PC. The deal hands Ubisoft both the game and the entire development team, while Amazon steps back from development but stays involved on the marketing side via Twitch promotions.
Financial terms haven’t been disclosed, but the move is strategically notable for who it brings back. March of Giants is led by Xavier Marquis, the original creative director of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, and production veteran Alexandre Parizeau, former managing director at Ubisoft Toronto. Both will rejoin Ubisoft alongside the rest of the Montreal team to continue work on the project.
Originally announced earlier this year as Amazon’s first internally developed MOBA, March of Giants is pitched as a 4v4 lane-based battler set in a World War I-inspired steampunk warzone, with players commanding towering “Giants” and large AI armies in heavily militarized maps. Early alpha tests drew modest attention but highlighted some fresh twists on the genre, according to Ubisoft and Amazon.
