In Hexarchy, players take control of one of several factions and navigate a procedurally generated world by exploring new territories, gathering resources, building cities and competing for dominance. What sets the game apart is its card-based system: every action, from constructing buildings to recruiting units, is performed using cards. By removing build times and waiting periods, the developers have created a faster-paced experience. A full match lasts just 30 to 60 minutes, making the title well suited for shorter play sessions.
Battles in Hexarchy are fast-paced and tactical. Units can be specialized and promoted, and in addition to traditional field combat, players can launch sieges or disrupt opponents through resource blockades. These military options are supported by a deep economic system, where resources such as gold, iron and food play a central role in card usage and unit upkeep.
Beyond a fully customizable single-player mode, Hexarchy features daily and weekly challenges, a ranked ladder and multiplayer matches for up to ten players with cross-platform matchmaking. One standout is Hegemony mode – a weekly, faction-based event in which player choices actively shape the direction of the world.
In its review, gaming magazine TheSixthAxis praised Hexarchy primarily for its innovative concept, with the game standing out for bringing the traditionally complex 4X genre into a compact and approachable format. The variety of game modes and daily challenges was also cited as contributing to its strong replay value. Criticism was limited to occasionally unfair AI behavior and a sometimes cluttered resource display. Despite these issues, TheSixthAxis awarded the game a solid 8 out of 10.
Hexarchy has received generally positive feedback across major review platforms. On Metacritic, the game holds a respectable user score of 7.2, although a Metascore has yet to be published. Steam reviews are even more encouraging, with 82% of more than 1,300 users rating the game positively.
