The Reetle SmartInk I is a versatile e-ink display that attaches to the back of an iPhone to provide additional functionality. Besides working as an e-reader, it can also create voice notes and show a wide range of content.

E-ink outperforms other display technologies in certain aspects, such as making content easily readable in bright sunlight without requiring a backlight. However, it also comes with drawbacks, including generally slower response times. As a result, e-ink displays tend to shine in specific use cases. Designed as an iPhone attachment, the Reetle SmartInk I is an e-ink display that may prove useful in some scenarios. Installation is fairly straightforward, as the device attaches like a typical protective case. Furthermore, it is compatible with models ranging from the iPhone 14 to 17 and connects wirelessly via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth using an app, eliminating the need for cables.

Measuring just 3.97 inches, the screen is relatively small and offers a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. Beyond e-books, it can display various types of information, including QR codes and boarding passes. With the press of a button, users can also record voice memos and have them transcribed and summarised by AI. Powering the device is a 300 mAh battery that promises up to 10 hours of use. A wireless charger is also included in the box.

The Reetle SmartInk I is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, with prices starting at around $120. Backers can expect shipments to begin in February 2026 if all goes according to plan. As with similar crowdfunding campaigns, this project carries inherent financial risks for backers. Notably, this is the first Kickstarter project launched by the company Reetle.
