The selection of tracking devices is steadily growing, and these gadgets can usually be divided into two categories. Some devices sport cellular connectivity and a GNSS module, which allow location tracking that’s independent of other devices. More affordable and compact options can be detected by nearby smartphones, as their location is then reported to a certain provider. Such products are fairly cheap and can be found on Amazon.
πTag offers broad compatibility
The new πTag is currently being crowdfunded and fits into the second category. It’s compatible with Apple’s Find My and Google’s Find My Device. Without compatible devices nearby, tracking is not possible, but there are no subscription fees and tracking can still work indoors. The accuracy is not particularly high, but the πTag can make a sound that helps locate it acoustically.
Smart tag with e-ink display
The smart tag weighs around 1 oz and measures 2.44 x 0.14 inches. Furthermore, it features a 1.57-inch e-ink display that supports color and can show custom images. The e-ink technology is particularly suitable for this type of device because of its very low power consumption. As a result, the battery can last up to 10 months. While the 100mAh battery is built in, the tracker does not need to be thrown away after that since it is rechargable. According to the manufacturer, the smart tag meets IP65 standards and should be protected from rain.
Only available via crowdfunding
As part of the ongoing Kickstarter campaign, the πTag is currently offered for a discounted price of $50. Delivery is planned for February 2026. Like all crowdfunding projects, this campaign carries a financial risk for backers who can potentially lose their money and/or not receive a product in return for their contribution.
