The new Amazon Echo Show 10's display can follow the user around the room
Amazon's 2020 range of smart speakers are now listed on its website. They comprise the fourth generations of the Echo and Echo Dot, whereas the Dot Show is now in its third iteration. This model's HD display has a new ability: 360-degree movement relative to its base.
In other words, it can swivel around freely and independently, which is done thanks to its motion-tracking and 13MP image sensors. Therefore, it can follow a user around the room, and can also provide a panorama of its surroundings to the devices of other users located elsewhere.
However, Amazon claims that it only works for tasks where an auto-adjusting display would be beneficial or needed (keeping the screen in view while moving around assembling something, for example). In addition, the roving screen has a hardware privacy shutter.
The new non-display Echo and Echo Dot versions have updated speakers and a unified, spherical form-factor. One variant of the Dot also has an LED matrix for information such as time or temperature. Another is a dedicated Kids model, which are appropriately styled as friendly, smiling panda or tiger heads rather than the more usual sober off-white or gray.
This variant can restrict communication app features to approved family or friends only, has animal-themed alarms and a "homework" mode. It can be pre-ordered for US$59.99 at present, as can its "clock" sibling. The vanilla Echo Dot 4th-gen is $49.99, whereas the Echo is $99.99. The new Echo Dot Show, on the other hand, is $249.99.
