Many Microsoft users will soon be able to make Skype calls over their Alexa-powered smart speakers. This feature is only available in select countries, however. Those living in them may be able to find the new function in the speakers' Settings menu.

Consumers with smart speakers powered by Alexa may now be able to link their Skype accounts to the devices in order to make calls with the service. This new function is being rolled out to users in 150 countries, which include the US, UK, India and Canada. It may complement the ability to take voice or video calls (depending on the hardware) over these speakers.

Users wishing to use Skype over their Alexa speakers may find the option under the Communications menu under the device's Settings. Should they have access to it, they could then link their Skype accounts to Alexa. Microsoft is offering customers who do so 100 minutes of free calls for 2 months. This offer is also limited to certain regions, however.

This latest partnership between Amazon and Microsoft appears to move Alexa even closer into the Windows ecosystem. The smart assistant will soon be available for installation from the Microsoft store onto compatible devices. However, it appears that only speakers with Amazon branding (i.e. the Echo, Dot and Show lines) are eligible for the newer, Skype-related collaboration.
