The Planck is a downsized SSD that provides desktop-level storage capacity and speeds. Using a USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection, it's capable of blazing-fast file transfers and real-time ProRes 4K recording on iPhone Pro/Max models. Buyers can now back the Planck on its Kickstarter.

Smartphones often don't support the range of storage solutions that desktop PCs and laptops enjoy. At CES, ShiftCam introduced the USB-C Planck SSD, which slots in at the bottom of Android and iPhones. With transfer speeds up to 1050 MB/s, the Kickstarter for the drive has now launched. Buyers can reserve the 1TB Planck for $125, while the 2TB version costs $199.

With the Planck, commuters and editors avoid the messy cabling that accompanies external drives. The device adds some size to smartphones but is designed to sit as flush as possible against USB-C ports. At only 10 grams, the Planck fits in bags and pockets while being shockproof and waterproof, with the exception of the exposed connector. The tiny SSD also resists heat buildup resulting from harsh outdoor conditions or long recording sessions.

One of the appeals of the Planck SSD is that it supports ProRes 4K video recording at 60 or 120 fps on compatible iPhones. Because of its NVMe chip, video editors can record in real time and quickly transfer files to other devices. ShiftCam claims the higher 2TB SSD capacity can store over 400 4K movies or one 150-minute ProRes 4K/120fps Log recording.

The manufacturer is also debuting the PlanckBank to accompany the new ultra-portable SSD. When a workflow moves back to a desktop or notebook, the USB-C hub accepts two Planck drives. The PlanckBank also outputs 4K video to monitors and 140 watts of power delivery to charge a MacBook Pro or other laptops.

The Planck Kickstarter has already exceeded its goal, so there is an obvious demand for an SSD aimed at smartphones. ShiftCam hopes to deliver the first units to backers in May 2025.
