In addition to the option of building their own systems from scratch, network administrators and system integrators have quite a few distros at their disposal, and SysLinuxOS is one of those based on Debian. Based on Debian 13 "Trixie" and released yesterday, SysLinuxOS 13 Mate is the first of its family to arrive, since the Gnome flavor is set to arrive next week.
Obviously, SysLinuxOS 13 Mate comes with the desktop environment with the same name. The list of included software is generous, since the image file is almost 6 GB in size. Wine is also included for those who might need to run specialized Windows tools or maybe just kill some time playing a Windows-exclusive game. These are some of the tools included in various categories:
- Internet: Firefox, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, TeamViewer, FileZilla, Zoom, and Teams for Linux.
- Tools: Gufw, Angry IP Scanner, Linssid, Nmap, Putty, GtkTerm, Zenmap, Bettercap, Etherwake, Firewalk, SSHGuard, Vnstat, Wiregui, and Cisco Packet Tracer.
- Cloud: amazon-ec2-net-utils, cloud-enum, openstack-clients, rclone, s4cmd, virtualbox-7.2, docker-compose.
- Accessories: Balena Etcher, Raspberry Pi Imager, KeePassXC.
The kernel used is a custom one, namely Liquorix. Its version is 6.16.8-1. Its highlights include Zen Interactive Tuning for improved responsiveness, PDS/BMQ scheduler optimized for mixed workloads, aggressive preemption, 1000 Hz tick rate, BFQ I/O scheduler by default, improved virtual memory handling, compressed swap with LZ4 and TCP BBR2 optimizations.
