Subnautica 2 is latest Steam game to leak before early access release date

The industry has been losing the battle to piracy, with several high-profile Steam game leaks. Joining Forza Horizon 6, Unknown Worlds’ underwater survival follow-up is circulating ahead of schedule. Buyers will have to wait for the Subnautica 2 early access release date on May 14th.
Who leaked Subnautica 2?
Social media posters began reporting that a playable build was being shared in hacking communities. Screenshots and footage from the project are already spreading. It’s a mystery how pirates managed to access yet another anticipated sequel, but some familiar theories have emerged.
Recently, Forza Horizon 6 appeared 9 days before its official launch. Gamers initially blamed the developers for uploading an unencrypted Steam pre-load. However, Playground Games later claimed the guilty party came from outside the studio.
SteamDB, the site that monitors activity on the Valve marketplace, suggested that a reviewer was at fault. It’s possible that the source of the Subnautica 2 leak is a journalist evaluating the title. Some observers believe that the same individual is responsible for distributing Microsoft’s racing game. Directive 8020 is yet another title that recently appeared sooner than expected.
Subnautica 2 has survived turmoil
The run-up to the Subnautica 2 release date has been anything but routine. In 2025, Krafton dismissed several key figures from its Unknown World development team. After the studio filed a lawsuit, a court decided that the publisher had wrongfully fired the employees to avoid payouts.
While the drama delayed early access to 2026, the survival game is now ready for public consumption. It ships with co-op multiplayer, a feature that not all fans of the series welcomed. A new DNA evolution system is another major addition, giving players the ability to better withstand the dangers of the undersea.
Like Forza Horizon 6, Subnautica 2 will also debut on Xbox Game Pass for PC and Xbox consoles. PS5 owners will have to hope that a port arrives in the future. It’s unlikely that the latest act of piracy will disrupt these plans, but reviewers may emerge as prime suspects.
