Subnautica 2 dev says team remains focused on “Best Subnautica experience” despite challenges

After a myriad of lawsuits between publisher Krafton, former Unknown Worlds founder Charlie Cleveland, and the new leadership team, along with tons of back-and-forth exchanges, we can finally move on to what everyone was worried about from the beginning: the game itself. Subnautica 2 is finally heading to Early Access next week, on May 14.
To celebrate this auspicious, worry-free milestone, Subnautica 2’s design lead, Anthony Gallegos, openly discussed the upcoming sequel to the underwater survival-exploration game we all know and love.
Anthony began by discussing the difficult stretch Unknown Worlds had to endure during the game’s development without diving into the nitty-gritty of the now well-known legal battle. Instead, he focused on the one thing that kept everyone motivated: the game itself and the community that had rallied behind Unknown Worlds.
Anthony stated in the dev vlog:
“As some of you know, the team has weathered a lot. But let me be clear about something: despite any rough patches, our goal has always remained the same, to deliver the best Subnautica experience we can. When it was at its hardest, two things kept us going. One is the excitement of working on the next Subnautica game, and what we have is really special. The other is you. Your endless enthusiasm and excitement drive us to deliver something worthy of the game.”
Subnautica 2’s early access release is just around the corner, slated for May 14, and will cost $29.99 on PC via Steam, the Microsoft Store, and the Epic Games Store. Additionally, the game will be available as a day-one title on Xbox Game Pass.
A launch sans a complete story release
Subnautica 2’s early access launch will not include a full story; Unknown Worlds instead promises two years of updates leading up to the 1.0 release.
Gallegos calls the early access launch build “the most ambitious starting point we’ve had.” It offers a solid, playable foundation with vast alien oceans, four-player co-op, and lush new biomes.
He was upfront that Subnautica 2 is still a bit buggy and will not feature a complete story at the beginning. For now, Unknown Worlds plans to keep the game in early access for about two years, rolling out regular updates and patches until its 1.0 release.
