In Redgar: The Space Viking, players step into the role of the young space Viking Redgar. Set in a retro-futuristic world that blends medieval fantasy with science fiction, the game pits him against the regime of Stratos X. Its locations range from castle-like spaceships and gloomy dungeons to neon-lit alleyways.

With handcrafted levels, a top-down perspective and plenty of fast-paced action, Redgar clearly takes cues from Hotline Miami. Instead of modern firearms and baseball bats, however, players use swords, axes, sci-fi guns and energy shields. Enemies can be taken out stealthily or overwhelmed head-on in tight corridors. Rather than complex character builds, the focus is on quick reactions, precise timing and choosing the right weapon.

Although the title has only around 40 user reviews on Steam, an impressive 95% of them are positive. Players particularly praise the energetic soundtrack, large arsenal of weapons and fast-paced gameplay. Criticism mainly focuses on the occasionally uneven difficulty balance and clunky controls. The game is also fairly short – according to HowLongToBeat, it takes just over four hours to finish.

Redgar: The Space Viking was developed by Finnish studio Kamara Creations and published by Bonus Stage Publishing in November 2023. The top-down shooter normally costs just under $10 on Steam. Until May 17, however, an 85% discount brings the price down to $1.49. According to SteamDB, the game was last available at this price in November 2025, while discounts of up to 80% have otherwise been more common. On the Steam Deck, the title is listed as “Playable”.
