The Dell G series of budget-mainstream gaming laptops spans two different screen sizes (15.6-inch and 17.3-inch) with seemingly every possible permutation of the Core i5-8300H, Core i7-8750H, GTX 1050, GTX 1050 Ti, and GTX 1060 Max-Q. With so many combinations to choose from, there is bound to be a configuration or two worth keeping an eye on.
One particular SKU is the G7 15 with the Core i7-8750H CPU, GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU, and 256 GB SSD for $980 as of this writing. The price point is notable because it is actually $20 less expensive than the same SKU with the slower GTX 1050 Ti and 1 TB HDD. Users would be insane to pay more for the slower option especially when the chassis, CPU, RAM, and external features are all identical. The GTX 1060 Max-Q is significantly faster than the GTX 1050 Ti by roughly 40 to 50 percent as shown by our examples below.
It's definitely uncommon to see an indubitably faster SKU sell for less than a slower configuration when all else is equal. It could simply be a price mistake in the current sale or a clever ploy by Dell to sell more of its GTX 1060 Max-Q systems. Either way, there is absolutely no reason to buy the $1000 G7 15 with GTX 1050 Ti when the GTX 1060 Max-Q option is objectively faster and cheaper at this moment.
