XCOM: Enemy Unknown is set in a near, yet unspecified future. The game kicks off with the sudden arrival of aliens, plunging the world into chaos. In response, nations unite to form XCOM (Extraterrestrial Combat Unit), a military organization dedicated to combating the extraterrestrial threat. Players assume the role of an XCOM commander, tasked with repelling the alien invasion.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown skillfully blends turn-based tactical combat with strategic resource management. Players direct their squads through missions on randomly generated maps, controlling each soldier individually. Soldiers are divided into several classes Assault, Heavy, Support, and Sniper each offering unique abilities and playing specific roles in combat.
On the strategic level, players are tasked with building and managing the XCOM base, researching new technologies, and developing advanced weapons and armor. They also need to monitor alien activity worldwide. Critical decisions must be made to control the panic levels in various countries and secure the resources essential for sustaining the organization.
All XCOM games on Steam heavily reduced
Developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K, XCOM: Enemy Unknown was released on October 12, 2012. Nearly reaching retro status, this strategy game has been very well-received, as reflected in its Metacritic scores – an 82 Metascore and a User Score of 8.2. Normally priced at $20, XCOM is currently available for just $1, thanks to a 95 percent discount available until April 22.
The 2016 sequel, XCOM 2, set 20 years after the initial alien war, is also significantly discounted. Normally priced at 50 euros on Steam, it's now available for just $2.50 with a 95 percent discount. The third installment, released in 2020, introduces XCOM: Chimera Squad. This game focuses on an elite unit composed of both humans and aliens. It's more compact than its predecessors and was not launched as a full-price title. Currently, XCOM: Chimera Squad is available for $3, marked down 85 percent from its usual $20.
If you're looking for the complete XCOM experience, you can purchase the Ultimate Collection for $17.60, down from 200. This collection includes all three games and almost all DLCs. The only exception is the 'Elite Soldier Pack' for the first game, which offers various unit upgrades.
