For those looking for a break from demanding tactical shooters like Rainbow Six Siege or Escape from Tarkov, the arena shooter X-MODE could be just the right choice. Released on Steam on September 19, this free-to-play title trades long prep phases and complex rounds for short matches, straightforward rules and instant action. “Perfect for quick, casual games with friends,” as the developer puts it.
Matches in X-MODE are short, often lasting only a few minutes. Movement is fast, controls are easy to pick up and the game feels beginner-friendly right from the start. Small maps, clear objectives and a simple set of weapons keep the action flowing without a steep learning curve. Players can jump into multiple multiplayer modes including Free For All, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Infection, Elimination and Point Hold. Both ranged and melee weapons are available, along with character and gear customization. Progression is reflected on global leaderboards.
X-MODE features a simple pixel art style, visually reminiscent of BattleBit, which drew a lot of attention in 2023. Reception has been positive so far, with all 13 reviews at the time of writing being positive, though some players have criticized the limited and underdeveloped map selection. Matchmaking may also pose a challenge for now, as SteamDB recorded a peak of only 28 concurrent players. Still, trying it out comes with no risk – X-MODE is completely free to play. Steam Deck compatibility (available on Amazon for $600) is currently listed as “Unknown.”
