The Dragon Quest series might be in for a series of remakes, as per comments made by the series creator Yuji Horii, even as Square Enix remains mum on the issue for now.

In the ever-expanding world of Square Enix’s iconic Dragon Quest series, creator Yuji Horii has dropped hints that indicate remakes of the long-awaited Zenithian Trilogy, Dragon Quest IV, V, and VI, could be joining the roster of growing modernized classics.

During a September 15, 2025, episode of the monthly livestream “Yuubou and Mahirito no KosoKoso Housoukyoku,” which is co-hosted by Horii along with manga veteran Kazuhiko “Mashirito” Torishima, the conversation shifted to why Dragon Quest VII Reimagined was prioritized, skipping prior entries in the series.

Torishima probed and questioned the decision to go for Dragon Quest VII instead of IV, V, and VI, none of which have received a modern overhaul in recent years. Horii’s response was, “A lot of things are moving around, but it was just done by the first chance.”

The conversation changed to playful evasion as Torishima said, “It’s like it doesn’t mean that they are not doing 4,5 and 6.” Horii deflected three times with “I didn’t say it.” The banter between the two continued until Naz Chris chimed in, “Does that mean VII is simply progressing smoothly?” Horii said, “Well, yeah, there was also a period for its development… and we do have a lot of progress.”

When Chris speculated on delays for a Dragon Quest IV remake due to its multi-chapter story structure, Horii chuckled and said, “Well, well…”

With Horii’s comment stopping short of outright confirmation, it pretty much implies that at least some progress has been made on remakes of Dragon Quest IV, V, and VI, possibly a neatly tied package, given their shared Zenithian lore.

Considering Dragon Quest IV, V, and VI’s interconnected lore, it explains why Dragon Quest VII Reimagined was given a head start, as the game could easily be redeveloped without risking continuity issues.

Square Enix has been on a Dragon Quest remake spree ever since Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake launched to critical acclaim in November 2024, selling over 2 million copies in just over 20 days.

Furthermore, Dragon Quest I and II HD-2D Remake are slated for release on October 30, 2025. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is scheduled for release in 2026. Last but not least, Dragon Quest XII, The Flames of Fate, was unveiled in 2021 and is being developed on Unreal Engine 5. However, Square Enix has been tight-lipped about the project, as it continues to ship out Dragon Quest remakes.
