If you haven't tried a Far Cry game before, now is a good time to pick up one of the best ones in the franchise. Released in 2014, Ubisoft's Far Cry 4 puts you right in the middle of a civil war in a fictional Himalayan country called Kyrat.
Heavily inspired by Nepal, Kyrat fuses cultures from Tibet and India, drawing heavily from both Hindu and Buddhist influences to create a unique setting for wreaking havoc. Far Cry 4's civil war is loosely based on the Nepalese civil war.
You play as Ajay Ghale, a Kyrati-American returning home to spread his mother's ashes. Of course, it wouldn't be a Far Cry game without throwing you in the deep end, and Far Cry 4 wastes no time in introducing its charismatic antagonist, the dictator Pagan Min (voiced by Troy Baker).
What follows is your usual Far Cry open-world madness, where you fight everything from wild animals to soldiers, while wielding a variety of weapons to cause mayhem. The series staple, the wing suit and gyrocopter, lets you survey enemy outposts from afar, and there is a large variety of options when it comes to vehicles, including a six-ton elephant to trample baddies with.
User reviews
80% of Far Cry 4's 20k+ reviews on Steam rate it as positive with an overall "Very Positive" rating on the platform. Players generally like the gameplay, and most reviews confirm that the game has better mechanics overall than the fan favorite Far Cry 3.
The game falls short in terms of story compared to Far Cry 3, but it makes up for it with a thrilling open world that is really fun to explore. There are enough challenges and side missions to keep you busy, in addition to well-designed main story quests.
According to howlongtobeat.com, Far Cry 4 will take you approximately 18 hours to play through the main quests, 31 hours if you decide to tackle side missions, and 40+ hours if you are a completionist.
The main negatives mention several problems with the Ubisoft Connect launcher, which is a mandatory requirement to play the game. The story is also very slow in the opening acts, and doesn't really pick up until the final few missions.
