It has been 19 years since the first Far Cry game was launched by Crytek. The series gave rise to six games, five of which were developed by Ubisoft. Let’s walk down memory lane and see which is the best Far Cry title of them all.

Six installments have come along since the release of Far Cry in 2004 by Crytek, with each release bringing a new setting, storyline and the occasional new game mechanic. Let’s delve into each of the six major Far Cry releases.

1. Far Cry 2

At the top of my list is Far Cry 2. This game was truly unique at its time and even till today. Far Cry 2 introduced the unique gameplay mechanics such as the weapons degradation, fire propagation, day and night cycles and malaria illness. The game is set in a failed state in central Africa where you play as a protagonist sent to assassinate the Jackal. The protagonist succumbs to malaria and as a result fails to assassinate the Jackal. Over time the game adds depth to the Jackal’s character and towards the ending you will find that he isn’t your cliché arms dealer.

2. Far Cry

This was the first and last Far Cry game developed by Crytek and during its launch it looked stunning. It was the progenitor to the “Can it run Crysis” meme with most of the PCs at the time struggling to run it. Overall, Far Cry raised the bar for PC gaming graphics and set the tone for the franchise.

3. Far Cry 3

Released in late 2012, Ubisoft added hunting into the gameplay for the first time while unfortunately removing weapons degradation. The story centers around Jason Brody as he and his friends are unwittingly stranded on an archipelago full of pirates and mercenaries. As you fight the pirates and mercenaries to save your friends you begin to descend into madness. In terms of graphics, Far Cry 3 was built on an improved version of the original Dunia Engine and would stress the best GPUs from both AMD and Nvidia at 1200p Ultra settings.

4. Far Cry 5

Arguably better than Far Cry 6, Far Cry 5 takes you to the state of Montana in which you must fight Joseph Seed and his kin. The similarities of Joseph Seed and David Koresh makes the game a whole lot more chilling.

5. Far Cry 4

The jump from Far Cry 3 to Far Cry 4 is not very memorable for a game and just feels like a rebadged Far Cry 3.

6. Far Cry 6

And finally, we have Far Cry 6, it’s just another facsimile of the previous ones with Giancarlo Esposito as the villain and ray tracing support. Need, I say more?
