Falcom has released Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter on Steam - it's a full remake of the original JRPG that originally set the stage for the long-running Trails series. The game updates the visuals, adds dual-language voice acting, and introduces a new combat option while retaining the original story structure.
Updated systems and combat
The remake allows players to choose between the original turn-based combat and a new real-time action mode. Core customization is coming back via the quartz and orbment system. This should give players more room to tailor their characters with different skills and abilities.
The game follows Estelle Bright and Joshua as they begin their careers as bracers, gradually uncovering a conspiracy tied to the Liberl Kingdom. Falcom has added content for the remake with more voiced scenes, additional side quests, and slightly larger maps. A full playthrough time is estimated at around 80 hours.
Demo impressions and reviews
A 5–7 hour demo was released prior to launch, and it got a lot of positive reception for its polished presentation and stronger localization. Early Steam reviews are trending "Very Positive" as of writing, with players in the review section stating that remake has the strengths of the original while working on accessibility even more.
Technical requirements (and Steam Deck info)
On PC, the game requires 33 GB of storage, 8 GB RAM, and a GTX 1050 or equivalent GPU for 1080p gameplay. Reports from users confirm that it runs well on the Steam Deck (curr. $755 on Amazon) with some settings adjustments.
Pricing and editions
On Steam, the base game is priced at $59.99. There's no launch discount, and cosmetic and item-based DLC packs are available separately. A free demo is still available for players who want to try the game before purchase.
The Trails in the Sky remake does follow the approach of Falcom’s earlier remakes and recent JRPG reissues like the Persona ports. It looks to be a great entry point for newcomers to the Trails saga.
