McDonald’s China has kicked off its Mid-Autumn Festival with a new collaboration with Black Myth: Wukong, mixing up the fast-food chain’s offerings with mythical Chinese lore through limited-run menu items and merch.
This partnership, reported by Daniel Ahmad on X, pays homage to Black Myth: Wukong’s monumental success when it launched globally in August 2024 and quickly shook the gaming industry, selling 20 million copies in its first month alone, and almost clinching the Best Action-Adventure award at The Game Awards in December 2024.
Now, a year later, Game Science teased its newest project in the Black Myth universe, known as Black Myth: Zhong Kui, during Gamescom 2025 Opening Night Live, centered around the ghost-catching deity of the same name. McDonald’s is tapping into the hype by combining Chinese festivities with some Wukong themes.
Starting in mid-September 2024, promotional posters featuring Sun Wukong, also known as The Monkey King, flooded social media. Select McDonald's franchises in China have been decked out with Wukong-themed decorations, including red lanterns, and pop-up shops featuring embroidered tote bags, T-shirts, brooches, and a velvet lounge robe adorned with the Monkey King balancing a burger on his head.
The menu changes things up with twists on McDonald's menu classics, including the Cheese Double Beef Black Gold Mooncake, which uses a black burger bun with sesame seeds. Other items include the Golden Crispy Chicken and Egg Mooncake, Crispy Shrimp Nuggets with Curly Fries, and a golden dipping sauce.
Menu items are priced at $2–4 or 15–30 RMB, based on regional listings, and are only available through the end of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Furthermore, McDonald’s China reported a surge in app orders during the promotion's first week.
The China-exclusive Black Myth: Wukong McDonald's promotion has caused global envy among fans, with U.S. fans of Wukong claiming they never get “good stuff in the U.S.”
Black Myth Wukong has shattered the Steam Charts with a 95.91% Overwhelmingly Positive score out of an overwhelming 1.18 million reviews on Steam. The game had an all-time peak of 2.4 million concurrent players 13 months ago and still averages a daily concurrent player base of around 30,000.
