When Loop Hero launched in March 2021, it reached over 50,000 concurrent players – an impressive feat for a small indie game with a simple pixel-art style. According to German gaming magazine GameStar, its success on Steam is well earned. Behind the retro visuals is a smart mix of genres that delivers deep strategy and high replayability.
The game is set in a world plunged into chaos by the mysterious Lich, who has wiped out reality and the memories of the living, leaving only darkness behind. The hero awakens on a looping path, memories erased – and begins a journey to reclaim lost knowledge and forgotten places, leading to a final confrontation with the force behind the chaos.
In Loop Hero, you don’t control the hero directly – instead, you shape the world around them. With cards, you place terrain, structures and enemies along a fixed circular path. As the hero travels the loop, they automatically fight monsters, collect gear and resources, and gain new cards. Your placement choices influence enemy strength, healing opportunities and the likelihood of special events, giving you full control over the game’s difficulty and rewards.
After each loop, you can either return to your base camp to spend collected resources and unlock permanent upgrades or keep going for bigger rewards, knowing stronger enemies lie ahead. The gameplay combines elements from four genres: roguelike, deckbuilding, base building and idle mechanics. GameStar praised this unique blend as one of the game’s key strengths. The constant search for better loot, new cards and effective synergies makes the gameplay loop deeply engaging.
Loop Hero received some criticism, especially for its endgame, which GameStar called repetitive and grind-heavy. The story stays rather shallow, and the visuals can become monotonous over time. Still, GameStar gave the game a strong 85 out of 100. On Metacritic, it holds a solid Metascore of 82, with a User Score of 7.6. Steam reviews are even more favorable: 91% of over 35,000 players gave it a positive rating. The game is also listed as “Playable” on Steam Deck (available on Amazon for $470).
