Following Verdun (2015) and Tannenberg (2019), Isonzo is the third hardcore shooter developed by Blackmill Games. Like its predecessors, it places strong emphasis on historical accuracy. The game transports players to the Italian Front of World War I, focusing on the fierce battles along the Isonzo River between Italy and the Central Powers, most of which occurred between 1915 and 1917.
Isonzo is aimed at players who appreciate hardcore shooters but don't need the most extreme take on the genre. As German gaming magazine GameStar noted in its preview, "Isonzo is a hardcore shooter made for those who usually find other games in the genre too punishing." One Steam user called it "Battlefield 1 without all the cringe" – a fitting description, as the game focuses on realism, authenticity and tactical gameplay while avoiding exaggerated theatrics and flashy effects.
The battlefields in Isonzo are large but manageable, keeping movement tight and the action close. Battles progress through several phases, with teams capturing objectives, destroying targets or holding off enemy advances. Intense close-quarters combat, including brutal bayonet fights, deepens the atmosphere. The game features a familiar class system: some roles provide support, others focus on long-range combat, while a few specialize in engineering tasks like building barricades or setting up mortars.
In its German review, Gamers praised Isonzo for its authentic World War I gameplay, strong sound design and varied class system. Unlockable equipment and abilities help maintain long-term motivation. However, the inconsistent enemy AI was criticized for being either unrealistically strong or oddly weak, which affects the solo experience. Technical issues and average visuals were also mentioned. Despite these flaws, Gamers awarded the game a solid 8 out of 10. On Steam, Isonzo has around 15,000 user reviews, 82% of which are positive. On Metacritic, it holds a Metascore of 73 and a User Score of 7.7.
