Sony Xperia 5
Sony never seems to fail to deliver when it comes to creating quality smartphone devices for its faithful audience. Knowing the formula of what is considered the best to be used and focusing more on what needs to be improved, Sony has been in the industry for more than a decade and such standing definitely gives them the lead within the smartphone industry. Sony hereby introduces the Xperia 5, which is believed to be a compact smartphone device designed specifically for potential users who are very keen on both display and style. The Xperia 5 uses a Snapdragon 855 chipset with a 128 GB internal storage alongside a RAM capacity of 6 GB in on its disposal. Some other notable specifications of the Xperia 5 include its usage of Gorilla Glass 6 for the front and the back panel with aluminum side frame, while the screen is about 6.1-inch OLED panel with a 21:9 resolution. This is considered to be the most significant update that this particular model has to offer. The relatively tall aspect ratio of 21:9 stands out greatly compared to its other competitor when it comes to watching videos and multitasking on split view mode. However, it is undeniable that fresh users of Sony’s smartphone models may or may not require some time to get used to the screen display, but the Xperia 5 still retains the aspect ratio as one of its main attraction points. The Sony Xperia 5 model also comes equipped with a hybrid stereo speaker setup courtesy of Dolby Atmos, which is a setup that has been previously used for the Sony Xperia 1 smartphone model. The Sony Xperia 5 has three 12 MP cameras which respectively serves a specific purpose. The camera setup consists of a frontal 8 MP camera with f/2.0 opening. Sony is also introducing the brand-new app, Cinema Pro, which helps users to create more high-quality video using Xperia 5 on its own and thus giving user the film making persons opportunity to create and share their most prominent work while being able to express their creativity in their own ways. It is safe to assume that Sony is still aligned with modern trends when it comes to smartphone production. The Sony Xperia 5 gives the brand a fair chance for improvement as well as charting out a learning curve on whatever is new and leaving behind anything that is not working for them. Conclusively speaking, the Sony Xperia 5 is a worthy competitor on its own. Compact-sized smartphones will never be the same anymore as the Sony Xperia 5 pioneers the way to a more futuristic development. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

The Xperia 5 is not the first smartphone that Sony has released with a 21:9 display. We have already seen the Xperia 1 and Xperia 10 trying to distinguish themselves from their peers with this aspect ratio, and now Sony wants to persuade people that 21:9 is the future with the Xperia 5. Having such a tall display has proven practical in our experience, but the Xperia 5 falls short of expectations in some crucial areas, as our review will reveal.

The Sony Xperia 5 is an elegantly designed, reasonably priced flagship phone, but quirky ergonomics, frustrating cameras and a lacking feature set makes it a poor alternative to the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S20 and iPhone 11.

The Xperia 1 is clearly the flagship smartphone but the Sony Xperia 5 certainly feels like one, just smaller. It’s a compact smartphone that looks good, packed with flagship-level performance thanks to its Snapdragon 855 SoC, and it has a number of surprises up its sleeve, such as the battery life and display.

More forgiving on the wallet and retaining the same triple-camera setup as the flagship Xperia 1, the Xperia 5 will be welcomed by budget-conscious Sony smartphone enthusiasts after ultra-wide and telephoto capabilities in their phone. Aside from a few minor differences, image quality is broadly comparable between the two Xperia devices, with the exception of geometric distortion in ultra-wide shots and changes to the depth-sensing algorithms in bokeh mode. Although opportunities for improvement remain in all aspects of the Xperia’s performance—if Sony wants to challenge the top ranked devices in our database—they remain capable devices for the most part; and dedicated cameras for ultra-wide, wide, and telephoto shots will add some versatility to your shooting options.

Essentially a shrunken version of the Xperia 1, this spiritual successor to the Xperia Compact line struggles to reconcile Sony's newfound obsession with tall phones and the smaller form factor. There are some bright spots with the display quality and overall performance, but its awkward design and painfully mediocre triple camera makes recommending the Xperia 5 a tall order.

We have some issues with the Xperia 5; the troublesome NFC and Fingerprint sensor, the bezels, how tall it is. These do reduce its appeal and also look pretty bad up against the near-perfect models released throughout 2019. For those looking for a flagship handset, the iPhone 11, OnePlus 7 and Samsung Galaxy S10 are all cheaper. On the other hand, a lot of people are specifically after a Sony device, and if you liked the Xperia 1 then you should equally enjoy the Xperia 5 because it's almost an exact replica - just smaller and, more crucially, £141 cheaper at £699. Sure, there's some work to be done here, but the Xperia 5 is quite a high five.

If you want a small Android phone, the Galaxy S10E is right there and usually available for the same price or even less. The OnePlus 7T starts at $599. The iPhone 11 has a much better camera and battery life for $50 less. There are so many deals on the regular Galaxy S10 that it’s not hard to find it for less than the Xperia 5.

Sony has made a strong phone, that despite its flagship cost, ultimately appeals to a more niche crowd that favours watching films and shows on the go or fancies themselves as budding movie makers. That said, it’s still a strong all-rounder if you can get past the design and the underwhelming camera. Given Sony’s market share woes, you’ll probably get it in a bundle deal with a PlayStation console or other Sony tech, adding some value.

There are some parts of the Xperia 5 that let the experience down: the fingerprint scanner is irritating and the camera isn't competitive. The Xperia 5 costs £529 SIM Free at Amazon or a quarter off its suggested retail price, that is still a good whack cheaper than the Xperia 1; the main difference between the two being a slightly bigger 4K OLED touchscreen display which - in theory - should impact the battery life negatively.

Excellent focus and accurate exposure ensure that selfies from the Xperia 5 are sharp, with good brightness. Many problems with color, noise and artifacts, together with acceptable but average results for texture, flash, and bokeh have affected the overall score, however. Front camera image quality remains on par with the more expensive Xperia 1, but both rank towards the bottom of our database.

This is the latest offering from Sony. Like most Sony offerings it is high specification, the 21:9 screen ratio may not suit all and like a lot of recent offerings there is no 3.5mm socket for headphones. Read on for more details of this latest offering to pass my desk courtesy of Vodafone.

Hot on the heels of the Xperia 1, the Xperia 5 is another strong flagship-level phone from Sony, this time offering a slightly better balance between top-end specifications and everyday practicality. The Xperia 5 sacrifices a little of the wow factor for a little more usability – but we’re quite happy with the trade-off.

The Sony Xperia 5 certainly scores highly in all the key areas that smartphone buyers are interested in: design, camera, and battery life. It's raised our hopes for whatever Sony might be planning for 2020 – if it puts together a serious upgrade over the Xperia 1 and Xperia 5, then Apple and Samsung might start to worry.

It’s hard to know what to think of the Xperia 5. It has a superb, cinematic screen, great stereo speakers and solid battery life. However, it’s badly let down by poor biometrics and some strange design choices. If you’re set on a widescreen display and watch a lot of films on your phone, you might be convinced considering its excellent performance. But for regular everyday use there are a number of better options, many of which are more affordable.

This is one of the more polarizing phones I’ve used in a while. On one hand, I absolutely love it — the design is beautiful, functional, and ergonomic. The cameras are fantastic and its software is fun to play with. On the other hand, that fingerprint scanner is maddening, some random crashes left me perplexed and disappointed, and the whole software user experience part needs a once-over by the programming team.

The Compact lives on in the Xperia 5! Sony's created another pocketable (at least by the standards of the day) high-end phone that isn't really missing any of the true flagship's features and, as an added bonus, even outlasts it in the endurance race. The Xperia 5 is then easy to recommend if you're a Sony fan, a Sony Compact fan, or just out for a small top-tier handset. The Pixel 4 might prove to be your thing when it arrives, an iPhone 11 Pro could make sense if you're fruitily inclined, and a selection of reasonably-sized Galaxies exist that may tempt you as well. Esteemed rivals these, and ones that the Xperia 5 can easily take on, so be sure то keep the small(-ish) Sony towards the top of your shortlist.

The Sony Xperia 5 is a smaller, more compact model of the Xperia 1 and it's lovely. The reduction in size makes for a more comfortable one-handed device, while many of the super flagship's features are retained. How the Xperia 5 will perform compared to the flagship Xperia 1 and its competitors remains to be seen for now, but we really like the Xperia 5. Sometimes good things come in smaller packages.

It appears that the demand for compact flagships is still alive and Sony wants a piece of that pie. After all, the company has been doing small Xperias since forever. At first glance, the Xperia 5 is exactly what users sticking to the compact premium smartphone segment are looking for. It can do pretty much everything the Xperia 1 can with almost no compromises, except for the screen resolution. Still, depending on how you look at it, this could be an advantage and you don't really need all those pixels in such a small 6.1-inch diagonal - everything appears to be perfectly sharp.

The Xperia 1 was a great handset, with its 21:9 screen delivering something a bit different to the competition. The Xperia 5 is more of the same, although this time around the screen is a smaller, a more manageable 6.1-inch model. Maintaining the same range of features that the Xperia 5's big brother had but at a cheaper price, this is arguably the more interesting phone.

For ages, Sony has taken its best device of the year and downsized it to a more compact form factor. And so it has again here in 2019 with the Sony Xperia 5, a slightly reduced variant of the Xperia 1 that debuted earlier this year. The new phone carries over most of the former’s specs and features, but does make a few adjustments along the way. Learn more in Android Authority‘s Sony Xperia 5 hands-on look.

Sony Xperia 5 II
The Sony Xperia 5 II is a smartphone equipped with 5G technology. Sony claims that it is the most compact Xperia smartphone. The whole machine is slim, with a weight and thickness of 163 g and 8 mm, respectively. With a 6.1-inch 21:9 screen, it will be very easy to hold in the hand. In terms of colour options, Sony offers Black, Grey, Blue and Pink options this time. The display features CinemaWide and HDR OLED technology. Although this panel of the Xperia 5 II only has an FHD+ resolution, its refresh rate and touch-sampling rate have reached 120 Hz and 240 Hz respectively. The screen also has an equivalent 240Hz Motion Blur Reduction interpolation technology and will provide a creator mode to achieve a display effect that is more in line with the creative intent. Aside from that, it has the X1™ engine for mobile image processing, which brings BRAVIA HDR enhancement technology to all of the viewing content. Even when playing streaming content, it can present better contrast, clarity and colour performance. As for the other specifications, there is a Snapdragon 865 processor, 8 GB of RAM and 128GB/256GB of storage (supports memory cards with up to 1 TB). As for the software, it is based on Android 10, with a planned upgrade to Android 11. The battery has 4,000mAh and supports USB-PD charging. BatteryCare technology is also present. In addition to extending battery life by optimizing the charging rate, there is also an HS mode, which allows the current to directly power the phone when charging it without going through the battery.
The Xperia 5 II uses Sony Alpha professional camera technology to provide users with excellent speed and accuracy to capture magical moments with sharp focus and perfect exposure. The Xperia 5 II's selfie camera has 8MP, and the rear three cameras, main wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto, are still at 12MP. The lens has Zeiss T* coating, which can reduce reflected light and present exquisite contrast and image effects. The device supports continuous shooting with 20fps, eye tracking and other features, and it is the first mobile phone that can record 120fps slow motion in 4K HDR. In addition, the body of this device is IP65/68 waterproof and equipped with dual speakers that support Dolby Atmos. The phone features dual-mode 5G and Wi-Fi 6. The Xperia 5 II even retains the 3.5mm headphone jack and supports HiRes Audio, Dolby Atmos, 360 Reality Audio, etc., making it a competitive multimedia powerhouse. It is also worth mentioning that the Xperia 5 II comes with a game mode, which can lock the frame rate, touch-sampling rate, blur compensation and so on. As for connectivity, it supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS, HSPA, LTE-A and 5G. Conclusively, the Sony Xperia 5 II is an upgraded version of the Xperia 5. It also has a very clear market position as a small-screen flagship. It has many additional features that put it into a higher price class. It is suitable for users who need a smartphone for multimedia purposes.

As mentioned, the Xperia 5 II is technically impressive. Its OLED display and Dolby Dynamic Bass speakers make it an excellent multimedia device. If you like to binge-watch Netflix shows, this could be the phone for you. It also delivers high-quality photos and videos, thanks to its wide range of functions. Finally, it's no slouch when it comes to mobile games too. However, it's a rather pricey phone that few Malaysians are willing to spend on.

It is no secret that Sony has long struggled to get its Xperia branding back on track and based on what I am seeing in the Xperia 5 II, the company is slowly, but surely learning from the mistakes of the last generation. At RM4099, the Japan-based brand clearly wants to give consumers their money’s worth with some of the added features that were lacking in the first Xperia 5. That said, there’s not a whole lot of groundbreaking features with the phone, therefore still making it a slightly tough sell.

If you can live with a slightly smaller, lower-resolution screen, the Xperia 5 II is a great value alternative to the Xperia 1 II. The triple camera provides plenty of shooting options, and both stills and video quality have improved since the Mark 1. Broadly speaking, image quality matches the pricier Xperia 1 II’s, with low noise and nice color the key strengths of the main camera. There are some niggles with dynamic range, detail, and autofocus, but for the most part the Xperia 5 II puts in a competent performance against rivals in a similar price bracket. Add to that the draw of a high-end processor, and the Sony Xperia 5 II starts to look like an attractive option.

The Sony Xperia 5 II is a great smartphone for those looking to get a flagship device but in a compact body. You get flagship-level specifications thanks to the Snapdragon 865 SoC, the battery life is great, colours are vibrant and punchy, 120Hz refresh rate, a headphone jack, and a good camera system with excellent control options.

Sony’s 2019 lineup was a good step in the right direction, but I was more optimistic about what the company was going to bring to market in 2020. The new Sony Xperia 5ii checks all the right boxes, delivering 95% of the Xperia 1ii’s best features in a smaller and cheaper device. The only real issue is that Sony is late to the game. Not many will be willing to pay $950 for a 2020 flagship smartphone that made its debut in December when the competition is gearing up to release their improved 2021 devices starting next week.

The Sony Xperia 5 II is a near-perfect phone. I like this even more than the larger Xperia 1 II despite not having a 4K display or wireless charging. The Xperia 5 II is just such a joy to hold and use thanks in part to its smaller size. I had forgotten just how nice it was to use a smaller phone and one where I didn’t need two hands to operate.

While I haven’t had time to dive deep into the Sony Xperia 5 II just yet, initial handling seems promising. It might not look it, but it is much smaller than the Xperia 1 II and much smaller than practically every Android smartphone out there right now. Its tall, narrow body makes it so comfortable to hold and you should have no problem at all using it one-handed. It’s actually been a good long while since I’ve used a smaller phone and I have to say, I miss it.

The Sony Xperia 5 II turns in an average performance overall among the devices we’ve put through our Display testing protocol to this point. In general conditions — indoors during the daytime and in the shade outside — it is quite readable, has a suitable level of brightness, and renders colors well, although with a slight tendency to oversaturate the blues. It’s in darkness and in bright outdoor conditions that the device falters. The Xperia 5 II doesn’t manage display in direct sunlight as well as some others we’ve tested, and it’s too dim in the dark, especially with the blue light filter on. In terms of video playback, the overall darkness when playing HDR10 contents is a big impediment to enjoying the show, and that outweighs the generally reactive video playback control and well-managed motion blur. A bright point for the Xperia 5 II is its nimbleness as a gaming device. Aside from some issues with aliasing, it’s fun for playing games.

The Sony Xperia 5 II offers excellent build quality, capable cameras, and a fast processor. But it's missing 5G and wireless charging, two features we expect in a phone that sells for nearly $1,000. If you’re a major Sony fan, or are seriously interested in the camera's cinematography features, the Xperia 5 II might be worth your while. For everyone else, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE provides similar hardware, along with wireless charging and 5G, for $250 less.

There's very little to dislike about the Xperia 5II - aside from its confusing name. Much like the Pixel 4a, Sony has somehow managed to build a budget version that's arguably better than the original and, at £599, you'll actually save money by buying the superior device. Taking it further, there's plenty here that rival smartphones either don't have or don't do as well; the video and photography modes are unparalleled, the battery seems to handle the 120Hz display without sweat and its performance defies its label as a mid-range device. Mark our words - this might well be the smartphone of the year.

Given that this is a powerful but compact handset the Sony Xperia 5 II retains much that's appealing - with a good build, lots of power and a great display. Certainly, it has more appeal then the costly Xperia 1 II, but once again, it faces strong competition - espeically in the camera department.

While I have really enjoyed using this phone, I don’t think there’s a huge group of people that should go out and buy this phone for $949. It’s a great phone, and if you have the means and don’t mind that sort of upfront cost, have at it. Most people can’t, which is why Sony doesn’t sell a ton of phones here. If this phone was launched on a carrier, I’d have no problem recommending it alongside a Samsung device, but since it’s purely unlocked and the whole update situation is sort of an unknown variable right now, I have to lean towards the “no” side of things.

The real only caveat of the device is its pricing: at $949 or €899, it’s still a bit pricy compared to other flagships in 2020, especially this late into the generational cycle. In Europe, the Xperia 5 II will be available in October, while the US again gets it quite late with availability only starting December 4th – which is extremely late and at that point you’d be better off waiting for the 2021 spring refreshes from the competition.

With its 120-Hz OLED display in the 21:9 format measuring only 6.1 inch, the Sony Xperia 5 III is a very compact and light Snapdragon 888 smartphone. Yet the Sony device still offers the same interesting camera system as the Xperia 1 III flagship.

Unfortunately, I didn’t come away with the same feelings that I did after spending time with the Xperia PRO-I. But that’s also not surprising when you consider that these phones are meant for two different audiences. Something that really stuck in the back of my mind with the Xperia 5 III is the cost. Sony’s retail price for this phone here in the U.S. comes in at $999 and with options like the Galaxy S22 and Pixel 6 available it might be a tough pill to swallow. Samsung’s compact flagship starts at $799, while the Pixel 6 is just $599. Sure, Sony’s promise here is to provide a flagship experience in a compact form factor, and it executes that very well. But this steep price tag is going to make it difficult for the Xperia 5 III to be considered a true contender in the space. And it’s really a shame because this is another great Sony device.

The Sony Xperia 5 III is an excellent smartphone in today’s world if you’d prefer smaller devices that are easier to hold. Granted, the display’s aspect ratio is uncommon compared to its competitors but what you get here is a solid performer with good battery life, great cameras, and excellent display while still being able to retain the 3.5mm audio jack. It’s not perfect but even though options for a compact flagship smartphone is few and far in between, going for this doesn’t mean you’re settling for less as this can serve you well. Just keep in mind that it’s rather pricey, at RM4,599. At the end of our Sony Xperia 5 III review, I award this with our Gold Pokdeward.

There’s no doubt the Xperia 5 iii is an excellent phone. It’s a small, premium, and feature-rich flagship with a standout design and a trick telephoto shooter. We like the beautiful display, Alpha camera experience, superior audio features, solid performance, and clean software. But while it’s better than Sony’s previous phones, it still lacks some critical features, like better computational photography, broader 5G support, and wireless charging. We might be able to gloss over these omissions, but considering the Xperia 5 iii is now months old and costs about $1000, that’s a hard sell. For that kind of money, you can buy Samsung’s outgoing Galaxy S21 Ultra (currently $945) or Google’s Pixel 6 Pro ($899) and have change left over. Not only are these two of the best imaging phones available today, they don’t skimp on full 5G support or wireless charging. Ultimately, we appreciate what Sony’s shooting for with the Xperia 5 iii.

Android 11 is accompanied by Sony tweaks like Side Sense and additional software, much of which can be deselected at start-up. The 4500mAh battery lasted for nearly 16 hours under the PCMark for Android battery rundown test, and Sony's claim of half an hour to charge the battery to 50% feels accurate to me. There's no wireless charging here, in contrast to the Xperia 1 III. The Xperia 5 III is a well-specified phone with a price tag to match. However, given that video viewing and photography using its 21:9 screen is a major selling point, you might be tempted to pay a bit more for the flagship Xperia 1 III with its larger, high-resolution screen.

There’s a lot to like in the Xperia 5 III. The display is top notch, the audio options are unparalleled, and the small form factor is likely to be a big draw for some, just because of its relative rarity – especially for a phone that also contains a flagship chipset and camera. It’s not all smooth sailing though, with a battery life and charging spec that are average at best, and a software update promise that isn’t even that, reducing the longevity of the hardware. And even though the specs are top-tier on paper, the small body has clearly created cooling challenges that lower its performance in practice. Ultimately though, the appeal of the phone will come down in large part to the camera. While the hardware here is indisputably capable – and the shutter button a rare treat – Sony’s software choices simply mean that this isn’t a good choice for anyone who just wants to point-and-shoot. If you’re not willing to get to grips with the advanced settings and tinker with shutter speeds, you’ll find better cameras – that are easier to use – elsewhere. And often for less.

The Sony Xperia 5 III is further proof that the Tokyo-based company is heading in the right direction, delivering utilitarian phones with amenities best appreciated by photographers, audiophiles, filmmakers and creative types. None of Sony's phones will fold or bend. They don't have trendy finishes or a menagerie of colors. The Xperia 5 III comes in black and green, which is as wild as Sony gets. When Sony decided to bring its Alpha mirrorless camera team's smarts to the Xperia line, many wondered if the audience for such a phone would be too niche. People asked similar questions about gaming phones like the Asus ROG Phone 5, and about foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Motorola Razr (2020). Instead of watering down its approach to appeal to more people, the Xperia 5 III is a third-gen phone that's the closest Sony has come to nailing what its audience wants. For all intents and purposes the Xperia 5 III is a smaller, more affordable version of the Xperia 1 III.

Much like its bigger sibling, the Sony Xperia 5 III excels when it comes to rear camera photography, its display and multi-media features, and all-day battery life. Sadly, the phone doesn’t quite capture the stellar aesthetics of the Xperia 1 III but the design remains close enough and still stands out in this price bracket. Overall, it’s another very good phone from Sony, if not on the expensive side once again. As much as I’ve enjoyed my time with the Xperia 5 III, it certainly doesn’t have it all. The lack of wireless charging and 5G mmWave, combined with a mediocre selfie camera and slow charging leaves the phone feeling a little rough in places. Of course, we expected some downgrades compared to the Xperia 1 III to make the phone more affordable. But Sony has discarded a few too many of the elite features that gave the Xperia 1 III its wow factor. As such, the Xperia 5 III is less appealing, even at a lower price. The lack of a long-term update roadmap is equally unfortunate for a phone looking to command such a premium.

The Sony Xperia 5 III is a smartphone with a very clearcut purpose, to pack high-end hardware into a compact phone. And it does that very well. You can easily use this phone one-handed, and while the screen might be a fair amount smaller than you'd get elsewhere, it is still fine to use for watching videos on your commute or reading through the news. The focus here is on quality and that seeps down into every part of the phone, whether you’re talking about the speedy 5G processor, the sleek but sturdy design or the excellent snapper with loads of customisation. The only area where it slightly disappointed me was the battery life which could definitely be improved. If you want a powerful but compact phone and you don't mind paying a premium price for it, then this is the best one out there right now. It’d be hard not to recommend the Sony Xperia 5 III.

The Sony Xperia 5 III is a solid all-round Android smartphone that delivers the goods in key areas including the camera, the performance, the battery, and the screen. That said, the unusual aspect ratio will prove to be divisive, and it’s not a cheap phone by any means.

In many ways, the Sony Xperia 5 III is the compact flagship I’ve always wanted. It is a smaller device that doesn’t compromise on performance, cameras or display, adding up to an unmistakably premium experience. But Sony shoots itself in the foot in three areas: camera software that you need to take a photography course to use beyond the auto mode, an overheating problem, and very minor upgrades over the Xperia 5 II (which costs significantly less). This is a niche smartphone. If you can make the most of it, you’ll love every second and forgive these issues. If not, I recommend looking elsewhere like the Google Pixel 6 Pro or OnePlus 9 Pro.

In its heyday, in partnership with Ericsson, Sony was one of the biggest players in the mobile market. Ever since it split and entered the Android space on its own, it has been consistently trying (and sometimes succeeding) to reinvent the wheel to recapture a little of its past glory. The Xperia 5 III is a testament to that ambition, showcasing a lot of what the company is good at. The camera arrangement is versatile, audio reproduction is great and the screen is vibrant and sharp. Battery life is a particular strong suit, and its long-tall design stands out once more. But for issues with thermal performance, somewhat iffy pictures from the telephoto lenses and a high price, the Sony Xperia 5 III would otherwise be a simple recommendation. There are also much more do-it-all, generalist handsets at lower prices that may suit better, such as the Galaxy S21 and Pixel 6 Pro. The Sony Xperia 5 III is an accomplished smartphone, but it’s perhaps just a little too specialised to be an easy fit for the public at large.

The Sony Xperia 5 III continues within its family line as an attractive device. It has benefits over the Xperia 1 III in that it's a lot more compact and manageable. But it's also pretty expensive in that position and there are innumerate options for devices with similar core hardware, but at a much lower price. The fundamentals of the Xperia 5 III are good: there's a comprehensive camera wanting to offer more to those keen on photography, but not delivering the same computational photography experience you might get elsewhere; the design and dust/water protection is good, and there's plenty of battery life. For some this will be the ideal phone, given its smaller-scale build, but the older Xperia 5 II might just offer you all those things too - without the inflated cost.

We wrote at the top that the accounts do not fall out in favor of the Sony Xperia 5 III, even though the price has been lowered by a third compared to the flagship model. It is clear that one has to make some compromises when the price is to be lowered, and some of Sony’s choices make good sense. There is no reason why a mobile with a 6.1-inch screen should have 4K resolution, and we did not miss the iToF sensor either when we tested the camera. But it’s a problem that the Xperia 5 III gets so extremely hot if you challenge the processor, and for the price we also expected wireless charging and better sound in the built-in speakers. The Samsung Galaxy S21 5G, which arrived at the beginning of the year, costs the same as the Xperia 5 III, but has twice as much storage space as well as wireless charging, and then it performs like a nuclear power plant without breaking a sweat. You should buy the Sony Xperia 5 III if the camera’s pro options are tempting – or if you generally prefer a more compact smartphone.

The Sony Xperia 5 III smartphone shares some of the excellent features found on the more expensive Sony Xperia 1 III but in a smaller, easier to hold body that's also got a better price tag. The camera is great, taking true-to-life photos and if you have the patience to learn how to use the Pro Mode then you'll capture even better shots. If you can get on with the unusual dimensions and want a smartphone with premium tech that's not priced at over £1000, the Xperia 5 III could be for you.

The Sony Xperia 5 III successfully scales things back from the lavish Xperia 1 III, with comparable performance and almost equal photographic potential wrapped up in a more compact body. Battery life is even better, too. It’s still lacking in a few fundamental areas, however, and those omissions sting all the more in light of flagship pricing.

After the somewhat disappointing debut of its bigger sibling - the Xperia 1 III - I was hoping that the additional month Sony took with the Xperia 5 III has helped in polishing all the little flaws and imperfections in this technology gem. Sadly, as it turns out, this is not the case. Don’t get me wrong, the Xperia 5 III is still a technology masterpiece. It’s pretty, fast, and comes packed full of features. The 6.1-inch 21:9 OLED display is as beautiful as they get and it also boasts a 120Hz refresh rate. However, there are small hiccups here and there that spoil the flagship experience promised by the hefty price of the Xperia 5 III. Things like sudden restarts, fingerprint reader phantom activation, proximity sensor woes, flashlight turning on out of nowhere can get on the nerves of even the most loyal and patient Sony aficionados. But let’s dive deep and find the good, the bad, and the ugly about the Sony Xperia 5 III.

While I enjoyed using the Sony Xperia 5 III as my full-time phone, I didn’t find enough updates here to justify a purchase over last year’s Xperia 5 II. Its screen is slightly less responsive, while the handset also seems to heat up faster with the Snapdragon 888 chipset – and there’s no excuse for Sony to skip on wireless charging. On balance, I’d say look at last year’s model instead and save yourself some money.

So if you're looking for a high-end Sony, the Xperia 5 III is the sensible choice over the 1 III. But, more importantly, the 5 III is hard to beat by any reasonably-sized outside competition either. And by that, we mean there's no match for the completeness of its spec sheet and more or less its actual overall performance. Now, there are a couple of issues for the 5 III - price and availability. It's more expensive at launch than any of the direct rivals we have in mind for it, and that launch is happening way too late - in September, after an April announcement. If you can wait until then, and then maybe wait some more for its price to drop a little, the Xperia 5 III might just make all the sense.

Sony has done many things differently on the Xperia 5 IV. The phone features an audio jack, a microSD card reader and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 packed into a compact body. Has the Japanese company made the perfect smartphone?
Source: Root Nation
To sum up, Sony Xperia 5 IV is a worthy evolution of the line. Compared to the previous model, the design is more modern, the display is brighter, the hardware is more powerful, and the shooting quality is better. There is also support for wireless charging, even the 3.5 mm jack has not been forgotten. And there is microSD support. At the same time, the body remains compact and durable, with water protection, and the design is recognisable. All in all, if you like small Sony and mobile photography, the new Xperia will be the best of the best for you. And even the problems with processor trotting won’t spoil the user experience. Although this is exactly the fly in the ointment – the thing that prevented us from calling Sony Xperia 5 IV the perfect smartphone.

By sticking to the same price point and making some long-overdue tweaks to the 5 series formula, the Xperia 5 IV is a worthy alternative to the ever-popular Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus ($999.99 at Samsung) and Apple iPhone 14 Pro ($999.99 at Best Buy). Sporting photography, charging, and multimedia capabilities that closely match and even exceed its rivals, albeit in a much more compact form factor, the brand’s long-standing reputation with audio and video enthusiasts remains intact. The Xperia 5 IV isn’t quite a bargain like the Google Pixel 7 Pro ($749 at Amazon), even with all this tech onboard, but it’s close and much more palatable than the extreme price tag of the Xperia 1 IV, making it a solid pick for mainstream consumers who have their eye on Sony’s best-in-class features. That said, smoother performance can be found in more modern rivals, such as those sporting a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, and aspects of the phone’s design are a little dated. Unfortunately, Sony isn’t matching the long-term support offered by other leading manufacturers either, making the Xperia 5 IV impossible to recommend to anyone looking for a phone that will serve them well past the three-year mark when security updates will cease. Sony has a very tempting hardware and software package in the Xperia 5 IV; now it just needs to play with the big names in the update space as well.

While I would say that the Xperia 5 IV, like its bigger brother, is a year-on-year update over the last generation, the updates that have been given to this phone’s camera capabilities are, interestingly, significant. Once again, while the Xperia 5 IV lacks the ability to perform continuous zoom like the bigger 1 IV, the way the phone tastefully applies the bokeh effect to each and every picture is impressive and perhaps one of the better implementations on a Snapdragon 8 Gen1-powered device that I have personally used, to-date. Of course, it also helps that the phone isn’t a slouch, by any measure of the definition. Having said that, I do find it a little hard to justify the asking price of RM4899, especially since, as you can see in the competition section, there are other devices in its class that offer more in terms of real-world and day-to-day features, including digital wallets, such as Samsung Pay or Wallet, or Apple Pay. Is the Xperia 5 IV a lot of fun? Not necessarily. But, if you’re looking for a compact shooter that is capable of capturing pictures in low-light situations with just a moderate amount of post-processing, this could be the phone for you.

The Sony Xperia 5 IV is a unique smartphone in 2023 with a focus on photography that remains unchallenged by any non-Sony device, though that can also be its downfall, requiring a lot of knowledge about photography to really squeeze the best out of the camera setup. Otherwise, it’s a pocketable smartphone that’s easy to use one-handed, offers great battery life and features like a dedicated shutter, an easy-to-access microSD port, a notification LED and a headphone jack that have been ditched by much of the competition. However, it’s not the very best Android tech on offer, lacking elements like an adaptive refresh rate, true fast charging technology and the latest processors used by most of the premium Android competition. If you’re a huge photography nerd you’ll likely love what the Xperia 5 IV offers, but for most people that simply want a great all-rounder, you may be better off elsewhere.

The Sony Xperia 5 IV is another stylish, highly capable phone that slips into the pocket better than most of its oversized rivals. However, with the arrival of the striking (not to mention significantly cheaper) Asus Zenfone 9, Sony no longer has the premium compact field to itself. Sony’s camera system is still incredibly quick and accurate, with a firm enthusiast focus that entails a physical shutter button and a host of manual controls. What’s more, Sony has finally rounded out the package with wireless charging, while boosting the phone’s battery life even further. With that said, the Xperia 5 IV remains a very expensive piece of kit, and its tall display aspect ratio still won’t be for everyone. Meanwhile, Sony’s Pro-focused camera still doesn’t offer quite enough automated assistance on the point-and-shoot front if you need it. The Xperia 5 IV falls tantalisingly short of being the ultimate compact flagship that we know Sony has in its repertoire, but that still makes it an excellent phone and an easy recommendation for anyone looking to downsize without compromise.

The Sony Xperia 5 IV’s battery performance finds itself between the Xperia 1 IV and the Xperia 10 IV. Its global score almost reached the average of our database, showing a way better performance than the Xperia 1 IV across almost all use cases, but standing far behind the Xperia 10 IV and its outstanding autonomy. Compared with devices from the same Ultra-premium price range ($800+), the Xperia 5 IV achieved a decent global score mainly because of its excellent autonomy and efficiency, but its charging performance was among the lowest. The 30W charger struggled to fill the large 5000 mAh battery. Its efficiency, however, was excellent, and its residual consumption, among the lowest in our database, was well-managed. When testing each usage separately, the the Sony Xperia 5 IV’s autonomy was always above average, and its performance on the go was just the same, especially when calling. The discharge currents were low on average, showing that the device was well-managed.

Despite its fantastic display, long battery life and genuinely brilliant performance, it is hard to fully recommend the Xperia 5 IV. The design, the narrow size, and the way the camera system is set up give it a more niche appeal. Worse, still, the £949 price is also off-putting. However, if you do like movies without borders and you're one for tinkering with photography controls, there isn't much better. This is a DSLR in smartphone form and considerably cheaper than an actual camera. So in essence it is potentially an alternative for street photographers that can't afford a proper camera.

The Sony Xperia 5 IV is a compact smartphone that doesn't skimp on hardware, it manages to pack an impressive camera system with lots of manual controls as well as solid battery life and speedy performance. While it won't be right for absolutely everyone, it will be perfect for those who don't like the idea of a huge handset.

The Xperia 5 IV really does feel like the middle child of the current Xperia range. It doesn’t get the fanfare of the all-singing, all-dancing Xperia 1, nor does it get the praise of the Award-winning budget performance of the 10. However, when given the chance to shine, the Xperia 5 IV is a really vital addition to the Xperia line for those who want something in between. If you want the quality build, audio performance and features of the 1 IV, and could happily live without the costly 4K screen in favour of a still very likeable 1080p alternative, then the Xperia 5 IV deserves your attention.

Sony's Xperia 5-series has long been a fan-favorite, cramming some of the best bits from the larger Xperia 1-series into a more compact body – and the Xperia 5 IV gets a lot very right. Its battery lasts for ages, its screen is glorious, and its cameras are beautifully tuned for pros who want to tinker. There's still a heat issue when taking photos and shooting video, and the phone doesn't have the latest in 2022 power of the Xperia 1 IV's periscope zoom. Its auto mode also misses the mark in the dark – so won't be for casual point and shooters. Still, it's a mighty, compact option that's a great buy for a certain kind of user.

Its auto mode also misses the mark in the dark – so won't be for casual point and shooters. Still, it's a mighty, compact option that's a great buy for a certain kind of user.

The Sony Xperia 5 IV gives the Sony smartphone experience in a smaller, easier-to-hold body that also has a slightly better price tag (although, we're not saying it's cheap by any means) than other Sony smartphones. There's a line-up of great features, including a that captures true-to-life photos, that will please most smartphoneographers but those who currently own the Sony Xperia 5 III may not find enough reasons to upgrade.

The Sony Xperia 5 IV had a lot to live up to when following on from the Sony Xperia 5 III and it's done a good job of standing up for itself. In fact, with a similar performance to that of the Sony Xperia 1 III, you'd do well saving a couple of hundred quid and going with the Sony Xperia 5 IV. Although, saying, that the Sony Xperia 5 III is still a worthy purchase, too, so you could save yourself even more cash and go with that device. There's a line-up of great features, including a that captures true-to-life photos, that will please most smartphoneographers but those who currently own the Sony Xperia 5 III may not find enough reasons to upgrade. The longer/taller body size and screen, which hasn't changed in terms of design for some time now, won't be for everyone but it is useful for watching films/tv shows and for viewing images. Overall, the Sony Xperia 5 IV gives the Sony smartphone experience in a smaller, easier-to-hold body that also has a slightly better price tag.

The Sony Xperia 5 IV makes small tweaks to the already strong compact flagship formula to make for an uncompromising phone in pretty much all areas. It is a smaller device with great performance, cameras, and display, paired with impressive battery life and an unmistakably premium, pocketable construction. Some of the issues do persist from last year’s model, but while some of these are technical issues like the overheating, others are deliberate choices you will have to factor into your decision, such as the prosumer-focused camera software. Sony identified its niche and it’s going in hard for it. If you need a better balanced all-rounder, I’d recommend looking towards the Google Pixel 7 or OnePlus 10T. But if you are a camera enthusiast who can make the most of the Xperia 5 IV’s capabilities, you’ll love every second of your time with it.

The Xperia 5 IV updates Sony's compact flagship device, making this one of limited selection of devices that offer a full suite of specs in a smaller package. There's a great display and stellar battery life, in a package that's ideal for those who don't want to lug around a huge phone. But the camera retains its focus on manual usage, which isn't as quick and easy to use as many rivals, while the price is high.

The Sony Xperia 5 IV’s overall display performance finds itself among the top devices in our database so far, supported by its outstanding color fidelity, which earned the device a top score in the protocol’s color attribute. Regardless of the light condition, the Sony Xperia 5 IV’s color rendering was excellent. The Xperia 5 IV display proved to be a good device for playing video games, with no frame drops, good accuracy, and good smoothness. However, despite no frame drops when watching videos, the device’s screen fell short in showing details, especially in dark tones. The device was also slow to react to changes in ambient light, and changes in the screen’s brightness were not smooth.

By sticking to the same price point and making some long-overdue tweaks to the 5 series formula, the Xperia 5 IV is certainly a worthy alternative to the ever-popular Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus ($920 at Amazon) and Apple iPhone 14 Pro ($999 at Best Buy). Sporting photography, charging, and multimedia capabilities that closely match and even exceed its rivals, albeit in a much more compact form factor. Sony’s all-camera eye autofocus and 4K HDR capture capabilities stand out for photographers and videographers, in addition to the brand’s long-standing reputation with audio and video enthusiasts. The Xperia 5 IV isn’t quite a bargain like the Google Pixel 7 Pro ($899 at Amazon), even with all this tech onboard, but it’s close and much more palatable than the extreme price tag of the Xperia 1 IV, making it a solid pick for mainstream consumers who have their eye on Sony’s best-in-class features. That said, Sony doesn’t appear to be willing to match the long-term support offered by other leading manufacturers, making the Xperia 5 IV impossible to recommend to anyone looking for a phone that will serve them well past the three-year mark when security updates will cease. Sony has a very tempting hardware and software package in the Xperia 5 IV, now it just needs to play with the big names in the update space as well.

Buying a Sony phone today is quite intentional. You probably won’t be swayed to get the rather specialist Xperia 5 IV if you had your eyes on an iPhone 14 originally. But if you want a phone that packs in every feature you can think of without compromising on performance, build, or battery life, then this is a great choice. Considering Sony doesn’t make many different phones anymore, I implore the company to extend software support for phones like the 5 IV – two years is insultingly little time for such a capable device to be considered up to date with modern Android features and security. Fix that, and I could recommend the Xperia 5 IV to a wider audience than I currently can. If you want a phone from the top drawer with a great screen, headphone jack, and cameras that act like actual cameras that don’t overly rely on software processing, it’s a superb choice.

The Sony Xperia 5 IV smartphone does improve in terms of display quality, powerful performance, long-lasting battery, Pro camera tools, immersive camera software, and wireless charging compare to the previous gen phone. However, there’s no doubt that the phone does have a few flaws such as it doesn’t get top-level performance, definitely not a gaming phone with stable performance. If you are looking for a better gaming experience, we would recommend you to check out the Red Magic 7S, while on the other hand, Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will give tough competition to this phone with its overall decent specs and 4 years of software support. Aside from this, the iPhone 13 Pro also comes as an all-rounder choice. If you want to experience pro levels of photography and videography, the Sony Xperia 5 IV is a great option.

On most points, the Sony Xperia 5 IV is better than its predecessor. The screen is brighter, the battery is bigger and now supports wireless charging – and the processor is faster. The camera software and all the automated settings have also finally been sorted out. Another significant improvement over last year’s Xperia 5 is the front camera, which is now 12 megapixels and has been equipped with a larger Exmor RS sensor. And compared to big brother Xperia 1 IV, it’s of course also understandable that some compromises have to be made when pressing the price, and some of Sony’s choices make good sense. There’s no need for a phone with a 6.1-inch screen to have 4K resolution, and we didn’t miss the iToF sensor when we tested the camera either. However, it’s a shame that the Xperia 5 IV gets so extremely hot if you challenge the processor. Moreover, the fact that the Xperia 5 IV has to do without the special periscope technology in the telephoto lens, which had become one of the Xperia models’ distinguishing features, is a bit of a drag on the overall balance. Unfortunately, in these times of inflation, it’s also not surprising that the Xperia 5 IV is more expensive than its predecessor, but for about the same price you can buy a true compact flagship like the Asus Zenfone 9, and that might be worth considering instead of Sony’s compact top model. The Sony Xperia 5 IV is a must-buy if the camera’s pro capabilities tempt. Then you won’t go wrong, because of course the little mobile is a good product overall, but the top rating and our special recommendation may have to wait until some other time.

And there you have it - the unmistakable Sony experience! It’s radically different from anything you’ve seen, if you've never tried an Xperia phone before, that is. This is a superhero under cover, ready to swap its tuxedo for a Superman costume and save the day. You just have to know which buttons to press. The Xperia 5 IV is a great phone for Sony fans, professional and semi-professional content creators, and people who like to go against the grain. If you’re feeling adventurous, or you want to switch your phone experience to something new and fresh, the Xperia 5 IV can do this for you. But at a price - a four-digit price to be exact.

As generational updates go, the Xperia 5 IV brings plenty of improvements over last year’s model. Wireless charging and a bigger battery with real staying power are both welcome, as are the refined trio of cameras. It’s now essentially the flagship Xperia 1 IV, only distilled down and made more mainstream – which sounds like a winning move to us. It doesn’t have the absolute latest and greatest CPU, though, and anyone wanting a simple point-and-shoot camera experience should look elsewhere. This is a creator-first phone that insists you get to grips with its manual modes to get the best results. For those prepared to put in the effort, it’s an excellent alternative to top-spec handsets from Samsung, Apple and the rest.

With that being said, the Xperia 5 IV packs more than enough punch, even with the 50% throttling - it's still quite a powerful device. And if you won't be playing games all the time, or process videos on the go, we'd say most people won't ever experience these performance drops. So, at the end of this review, we can safely recommend the Sony Xperia 5 IV for its compact design and camera prowess, its battery life and speaker experience. It's one of the best 2022 flagships with excellent pocketability, and it has earned our big thumbs up.

Back in May, I called Sony’s Xperia 1 IV “An Entire Film Studio In Your Pocket.” The trouble is … it’ll cost nearly $1600 when it finally launches in the US later this month. So Sony did what Sony does: packaged up most of the important parts of the 1 IV into a more petite package with a similarly shrunken shelf price. I’m Michael Fisher and I took the new Sony Xperia 5 IV to Sun Valley, Idaho to see how much compromise you need to settle for when you buy an Xperia for $999.

There’s a lot to like with the Sony Xperia 5 IV. It retains features, like expandable storage and a capable headphone port, that are often ditched elsewhere, while the smaller size helps to set it apart from the larger competition. But the camera is underwhelming and the phone is extremely expensive at over €1000.

The Sony Xperia 10 IV is one of the thinnest and lightest phones to house a 5,000mAh battery. But Sony has sacrificed refresh rates, charging speeds, and camera quality to that end, resulting in a wildly imbalanced mid-ranger. There are a few upgrades over the Xperia 10 III and it has some genuinely flagship-tier features and specs, but with so many great phones at a similar price, you'd have to be a hardcore Xperia enthusiast to not shop around.

Sony's Xperia 5 V is a strong camera phone for small hands: featuring a 48 MP dual camera, the slim 21:9 smartphone manages to replace three lenses. The 6.1-inch small Android 13 phone is also equipped with the lightning-fast Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and a 5000 mAh battery.

Every Xperia phone is a bit weird, but Sony's kept that mostly in check with the Xperia 5 V. At its best, it's these odd features like the small and slim chassis, Sony's library of creativity apps and its brilliant battery longevity that'll sell you on the phone, since they're things rivals can't directly match. But there are still some reasons why I'd point you toward a Galaxy S24 or Pixel 8 instead.

The Sony Xperia 5 V Micro and Nothing Phone 2a Micro are two 'upcoming' compact phones that are actually just April Fools 2024 jokes. But I really wish these mini smartphones actually existed, as small mobiles are now all but dead. We're still waiting for an Asus Zenfone 11 rather than a massive Ultra, while the best/only compact phone of 2024 is Samsung's Galaxy S24. And even then it's over six inches, which frankly most of us chaps would class as giant. So, the Sony Xperia 5 V Micro isn't real. Sony's last mini smartphone was the XZ2 Compact, back in 2018, so don't expect another small blower from them any time soon. And the Nothing Phone 2a Micro would be the cutest wee mini mobile in 2024, if it also existed.

In short, I think the Sony Xperia 5 V is a great phone. It's fast, the battery lasts for ages, it's comfortable to use one-handed, the camera is top-tier, and it has a few features that are rare these days, like the shutter button, SD card slot, and the 3.5mm audio port. Having said that, it's not for everyone. You'll need to know your way around more complex camera settings to take the best photos possible, it is relatively slow to charge, the screen might be too small for some people, and despite being cheaper than the Sony Xperia 1 V, it's still quite expensive. Weighing whether the Sony Xperia 5 V is a good buy or not will depend largely on how you use your phone day to day. Most importantly, whether you're into photography or videography, or whether you would like to learn. This will also be a good choice if you're looking for a small yet powerful handset, but less so if you're not necessarily looking for something more compact.

With the Xperia 5 V, Sony is to be commended for finally grabbing the bull by the horns and making the range more affordable. However, in doing so, Sony has arguably made the Xperia V 5 worse than its immediate predecessor, which is never a good look. While the range’s exemplary performance and battery life have been slightly improved upon, these weren’t areas that needed addressing. Conversely, the design is slightly clunkier, the screen is slightly worse, and the camera is less flexible than before – albeit with a better main sensor. Ultimately, while the Xperia 5 V is cheap for a Sony flagship, it’s arguably not cheap enough. Not when you can get so many formidable compact flagship phones (the Pixel 8, the Galaxy S23, the Xiaomi 13, the Zenfone 10) for similar or even less money, none of which feel quite as compromised as Sony’s latest.

The Sony Xperia 5V is a proper flagship smartphone that did bring some necessary improvements in every department, including design, display protection, performance, camera, and even battery but it was not without some downsides as well. The design improvements were needed and the smartphone needed the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 as the older Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 had a bad reputation for being power-hungry and heating. So, the changes in the chipset are certainly appreciated and it has also resulted in better battery life. The downside is that the smartphone now lost its telephoto lens that was present in the Xperia 5IV. Apart from this, the refresh rate support could have been better and also the smartphone disappoints in terms of better nits brightness. Besides this, rest everything seems manageable. Not to mention, other smartphones do still have telephoto lenses and at a much lower price tag.

The Sony Xperia 5 V is not the best value phone you can get at this level. It doesn’t have true fast charging, a zoom camera, or the beefiest speaker array around. But it does have other appealing parts. This is a relatively petite phone with plenty of power. It has a headphone jack, not found anywhere else at this level. And its battery life inspires confidence and helps make up for the fact a 5-minute charge doesn’t go as far here as it would in most rivals. While there are plenty of little issues to point out, the actual experience of living with the Sony Xperia 5 V is an entirely painless one.

Sony nails the cinematic experience on a phone once again, something it’s getting very good at. It’s hard to pick faults in its picture, and the smaller screen and lower price tag will most likely be a draw for many who don’t want or need everything the flagship Xperia 1 V offers. If we’re being frank, the Xperia 5 V is the best chance that Sony has to distract people from the iPhones, Galaxys and Pixels of the world, and it certainly shouldn’t be overlooked.

A clear design flaw in the build drags down the score, and you shouldn’t expect too much in terms of performance It’s undoubtedly a quality phone with both a good camera and great media features, but such an orthodox phone is too niche for most people.

The Sony Xperia 5 V has well-suited saturation and color rendering. But the main downside is the presence of colored stripes when the device is viewed at an angle (rainbow effect). Although the variation in hue is not so important, the alternating pattern is really visible. The device is readable in indoor conditions, but the screen lacks brightness in outdoor conditions, especially under sunlight. In dark conditions, the device’s brightness is comfortable when the blue light filter is activated. The Xperia 5 V’s performance in video playback was dissatisfying in terms of contrast and brightness, and darker tones are generally difficult to discern in HDR10 videos. The Xperia 5 V, which is at the same price point as its predecessor, achieved the same score as the Xperia 5 IV. The newer model showed no overall improvement, and the maximum screen brightness was actually higher on the Xperia 5 IV.

In our DXOMARK Camera tests the Sony Xperia 5 V showed improvements over the predecessor Xperia IV in both the photo and video categories. However, the omission of a dedicated tele camera module on the latest model means that performance in the zoom category has actually decreased compared to last year’s device, and overall the Sony is not making it anywhere close to the top of our ranking. Still images captured with the Xperia 5 V showed good exposure in daylight and indoor conditions. Our testers also liked the well-controlled noise but criticized the limited dynamic range when shooting high-contrast scenes. Video mode offered a stable autofocus and effective brightness management in bright light. However, like in photo mode, dynamic range was limited, and video noise was noticeable in all light conditions.

Reviewing the Sony Xperia 5 V, with a full camera test, gaming on Genshin Impact, battery life and beyond. Plus an unboxing, which takes all of two seconds. The Sony Xperia 5 V is a mini version of the flagship phone and one of the best compact UK handsets of 2023 - but the £850 price ain't cheap! First up, that camera tech has switched to a dual lens setup. Sony has scrapped the dedicated telephoto shooter, but you do get the same Exmor-T hardware as the flagship for the Xperia 5 V primary cam. Along with Photo Pro, you can capture natural looking pics any time of day, with full DSLR controls. The Sony Xperia 5 V also boasts excellent battery life, along with dependable performance. I did see some networking lag when on mobile data and some juddering when shooting 4K video with the camera, but these appear to be software issues. If you're after a mini phone in 2023, this offers a similar experience to the 1 V. Creators and gamers have a lot to enjoy here, as well as anyone who streams a lot of music and movies.

As I suggested up top, the Sony Xperia 5 V is a small phone that has a big likelihood of splitting opinion: some will love its small stature and big power, while others will find its tall-and-narrow design tricky to use and some features too adjacent to the norm. Personally I find it too small, but I can appreciate there will be some who will love this phone for all its points of difference. The Xperia 5 V fills a niche that few others cater for in the market, which I massively respect. There's tonnes of power, so nothing foregone there, the battery life is impressive too, and the updated camera system – despite losing the zoom lens of its predecessor – now has a really strong main that delivers realistic and distinct pictures from an app that super-snappy in operation.

The Xperia 5 V is a rarity: a compact phone built for multimedia lovers. That makes it even more of a real shame that Sony's slim flagship has grown a little stale, and in some areas become progressively worse, with its latest outing.

“Don’t mess with a working system,” as the saying goes, and Sony dutifully follows this recipe with the compact Sony Xperia 5 V, which as always is a slightly downgraded and thus cheaper version of this year’s excellent top model, the Sony Xperia 1 V. So you get the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and the new 48 megapixel camera with Exmor T sensor as well as the large 5,000 mAh battery with a long lifespan if you choose the Xperia 5 V, but you have to do without the telephoto lens and live with the fact that the compact phone tends to get a little too hot sometimes. In hindsight, however, you might wish that Sony would dare to experiment a little more than they currently do. The Xperia 5 V is, apart from a few changes, a faithful copy of its predecessor, and especially the angular design with the rather wide black screen border is starting to look old-fashioned here at the end of 2023.

The 2023 Xperia 5 follows the patterns we have come to expect from Sony: Some impressive technical specs mixed with lots of things that were inherited from previous generations. By this time, it appears that the Japanese company is tailoring its products to a very specific segment of the market, which reminds me of lots of other niche products from the Asian country. The Panasonic laptops with circular trackpads (and optical drives), the Aibo robot pets, mobile digital TV (oneSeg, which for a brief moment was also very popular in my native Brazil), and arcade games (*sigh*). Sony may argue that it thinks the Xperia 5 V is the best phone for content creators, but that group has long sailed to the iPhone waters.

The Sony Xperia 5 V won't be an obvious upgrade for people with older 5-series phones – it's comparatively chunky, its screen quality is weaker, and its optical zoom pales – especially set against the Xperia 5 III. We also wish it had more than 128GB of storage, even with that microSD card slot. It costs less than its predecessor at launch, though, and with a best-in-class main camera, great battery life, and excellent performance, there's just enough here to help it hold its own against today's high-end competition, especially on the camera front.

The Xperia 5 V is a great little phone. That being said, smartphone evolution seems to be slowing down at alarming rates. A new camera sensor and a better chipset now justify launching a new model, while a couple of years ago it would've meant PR harakiri for the poor company brave enough to try this. Back to the Xperia 5 Mark V. There are a lot of pros to this phone, some of them on paper, others transcending pure specs and entering real life. The screen is great, the chipset is fast, and there are a whole bunch of now-oldschool options such as a 3.5mm audio jack, a microSD card, etc. The double-action shutter button is a thing every phone with a decent camera should have, and the new main camera sensor is great, no doubt about it. There's very capable pro-grade software on top of all this, and if you're patient and passionate enough, you can do wonders with the Xperia 5 V.

The Xperia 5 V targets professional photographers on the go with its many camera apps and features, and we are sure it will find some love from them. The phone is super compact yet powerful and has amazing battery life, which will tip the scales for many users. Being an expensive device makes the Xperia 5 V a tough sell, but far from impossible. This phone, just like many other Xperias, has a unique charm and innovative set of features - a combo that will make it attractive to the right people for sure.

By adding a bit more mainstream appeal, but not sacrificing the features long-time fans have come to expect, the Xperia 5 V is a wonderfully well-rounded smartphone. It’ll please photographers who insist on manual controls, but computational cleverness and an auto-night mode mean novices can get in on the action too. Performance is comfortably on par with rivals, battery life is fantastic, and the software is streamlined. The display is a knockout too, even if the aspect ratio is still a bit “love it or hate it”. Not everyone will appreciate the camera’s more nuanced colour treatment either – but those wanting a break from the overly vivid snaps seen on other phones will be more than happy here. Price-wise it’s also very competitive, landing in the UK on par with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Google Pixel 7 Pro at £849 (although both can be had for less, having done the rounds for the best part of a year).

With a brief look at the Xperia 5 V, we couldn't draw conclusions regarding it. The Sony phone still features many impressive features in a single package, but its design is starting to show its age. Likewise, a few of the app additions look dated on top of the stock Android 13 interface, with some design touches inherited from the Xperia Z days. On the other hand, it is good to see that Sony is soldiering on features that were abandoned long ago on other flagship phones, like the headphone jack or microSD slot. We will take a closer look at the Sony Xperia 5 V soon after spending more time with the device and will update this page with a full review, so make sure to follow nextpit's front page and social media channels!
