Reviews for the Asus Zenfone 10
Palm-sized smartphones are becoming increasingly rare, so the Zenfone 10 is just right: it promises a lot of power in a compact format at comparatively moderate prices. Find out in our review whether buyers have to make compromises.

If you want a compact Android handset without sacrificing performance then the Asus Zenfone 10 is hard to beat. But the balance of price and features is not quite perfect: a few tweaks could improve the value proposition. If you’re looking for a great allrounder then you’ll need to weigh it up against the likes of the Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy S range. One key question to consider is whether you really need all of that grunt, when a few features like the camera quality and charging speeds lag behind what you might expect at this price point.

I have to say there have been some improvements over last year’s Zenfone 9 with the new Zenfone 10 and honestly I am still a little baffled by the device given it is still a much smaller device compared to other high end devices which then Zenfone is technically marketed for. That being said, if you do prefer a small device that still offers high-end features and capabilities, alongside having a 3.5mm audio jack and offers a good camera and user experience, then the Zenfone 10 could be the device you are looking for. In all honesty, it is a device that could persuade me to rethink bigger is better, not that I am a size queen!

I think that it is the compact size, combined with flagship capabilities and equipment, that make this smartphone so unique. Do I recommend it? Honestly, I wouldn't buy it for myself because it's a bit too small for me. But those who need a small smartphone will be truly satisfied. They don't have to make any compromises, because with this Asus they will get everything that's best, only in a compact form. Finally, a few words about prices. As you might expect, they are as flagship as the equipment of this phone. Starting from PLN 799 for the basic 8/128 version, the average 8/256 can be purchased for EUR 849, and the 16/512 for EUR 929. These are not exaggerated prices, they are adequate to what this phone represents in terms of equipment. It's simply a flagship in a smaller package.

The Asus Zenfone 10’s display performance was in line with other screens in its category. Although the Zenfone 10’s maximum brightness, which we measured at 980 nits, was not as high as other devices. The device’s screen readability was well-adapted to indoor and low-light conditions. The display stood out with its great color rendering in all lighting conditions, achieving a color score that was only a few points away from the top. However, when viewing the screen at an angle, the device showed visible irisations in alternating green and pink colors, depending on the angle viewed. The Zenfone 10’s touch and motion performances make the device well suited for gaming, despite some image aliasing on highly detailed games such as Asphalt 9. When viewing HDR10 videos on the Asus Zenfone 10, the screen adapted its brightness correctly, with a fair rendering of dark tones, but mid tones were flat amid a visible green cast over the display.

If you want a really small Android phone, and want better camera performance, then you’d be better off looking at the previous version of this phone, the Asus Zenfone 9, which has a better set of cameras. Alternatively you should look at the Samsung Galaxy S23, and S22, which both feature a triple camera system with a telephoto camera. Like the Zenfone 9, however, the 10 offers some mixed results, with the main camera performing the best, but worse than other phones on the market, with lens flare being a problem. There’s a reasonable but downgraded ultra-wide-angle camera, and a downgraded selfie camera. It’s unfortunate that this phone can’t seem to match or compete with Samsung or Google. There are other phones available for less that offer better cameras, and better photographs.

The Asus Zenfone 10 delivered a balanced performance in the DXOMARK Audio tests, doing quite well in both playback and recording. The device’s main drawbacks in terms of audio quality were a lack of treble in playback, which resulted in a slightly muffled and dark sound, as well as a high sensitivity to wind noise in recording, despite a dedicated wind-noise reduction function. Playback performance through the built-in speakers was consistent across use cases, whether listening to music, watching movies or playing games. As a recording device, the Zenfone 10 delivered the best results with vocal memos, but performance was also great with the main camera app.

Like Zenfone 8 or Zenfone 9, Zenfone 10 is definitely worth buying. And at a reasonable price for such a good device. The advantages are, of course, the small size, quality build, processor, smoothness and software solutions offered by ASUS in combination with customised pure Android, 3.5 mm jack, design and long-lasting battery, which the Zenfone 8 could not boast of, which I had to charge sometimes up to three times a day. The disadvantages include slightly weaker cameras compared to competitors, lack of even greater evolution compared to its predecessor, no eSIM, for some, “only” 30W of charging, short support (up to two versions of Android) and sluggish and unstable software updates. If you have a Zenfone 8, then upgrading to the Zenfone 10 will be a huge positive leap, while if you have a Zenfone 9, then you should only upgrade to the 10 if you need wireless charging and the latest version of Android for as long as possible.

The Asus Zenfone 10 is the definition of an iterative upgrade, with a few small upgrades (and one or two downgrades), however, Asus hasn’t fixed many of the issues and dubious choices of the Zenfone 9 – the price is too high for what you get, the chipset is unnecessarily powerful and the cameras and charging speed are just ‘fine’. If you’re dead set on getting a mini mobile, it’s worth considering, but otherwise, move on.

At $699, the Asus Zenfone 10 competes closely with the OnePlus 11, Google Pixel 7 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S23, all three of which field better software upgrade policies (three-to-four years versus Asus' two) and are made by brands that you can trust for after-sales support. There are really two types of users that I'd recommend the Asus Zenfone 10 to: Compact phone enthusiasts and audiophiles who seek a modern handset that still has a 3.5mm headphone jack. If you're on either end of those spectrums, or both, no other phone will serve you better.

It's the best small phone for fans of compact handsets, but the Asus Zenfone 10 could pull users away from Samsung and Google flagships with top-quality performance and battery life. If you can forgive its more limited photography options and the shorter-than-average software support window, the Zenfone 10 is a top choice.

The ASUS Zenfone 10 is a compact smartphone that easily fits in a pocket but the display feels a bit too small when in use. You only have 2 cameras on the rear and it's a shame there's no telephoto lens built-in as this would have really added to the types of photos you can capture with the Zenfone 10. Photo quality is generally good but some results are overcooked which not everyone will like. The ultrawide lens does perform well, though, as does 2x zoom and the bokeh is lovely, too. The inclusion of gimbal IS is great, helping keep shots steady and the lag we found on the Zenfon 9 seems to have been fixed on the Zenfone 10. Another plus is the headphone jack and waterproof rating. Price is another slight hurdle as while it's not too expensive, it's not reasonable enough (yet) to make it a smartphone you'd not question buying. Give it some time for the price to come down and this compact smartphone could be one you take a look at.

If you need a small phone in 2023, the Zenfone 10 is the best option by a long mile. ASUS has once again managed to deliver a phone that delivers all the features you want in a high-end phone in a chassis that's designed for one-handed use. There's even a 3.5mm jack here, and you get wireless charging as well. Throw in a clean software with extensive customizability, IP68 ingress protection, and decent cameras, and you get a phenomenal all-round package. I would've liked a zoom lens as that would've made the Zenfone 10 just that little-bit more suited for my own needs, but other than that omission, there isn't anything missing here.

The Asus Zenfone 10 is another cool glass of water in a smartphone desert populated by lumbering supersized flagships – especially now that the iPhone Mini line is no more. It’s small, smart-looking, and eminently capable. The improvements over the Zenfone 9 are admittedly few and far between, and I would have liked to have seen more progress in the design and camera categories, not to mention charging speeds. It’s never good to see smartphone prices going up either, though that appears to be the norm in 2023. Performance and battery efficiency have taken a step forward, however, and the provision of wireless charging removes one glaring area of compromise from the Zenfone package. Overall, the Zenfone 10 is the best – and indeed only – genuinely compact flagship on the market, but it’s one that’s still just a few tweaks away from being a definitive statement.

The Zenfone 10 is an impressive phone with a spec sheet rammed full of everything you could possibly ask for. It’s got amazing battery life, top-tier performance, a headphone jack, and some of the most customisable software going, all in a phone that’s actually going to fit in most pockets. Despite this, it’s a premium-priced phone that has below-flagship cameras. If you don’t care about having the best phone camera then you won’t mind, but you can get a better shooter, and spend much less, with the Google Pixel 7a. Asus also needs to do better with software support. A phone with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will perform well for at least five years, but Asus only promises two Android version updates with four years of security patches. But if you don’t care about Android’s latest features then this is still an excellent small phone with battery life that defies belief.

There are not too many compact smartphones in the market at the moment. Even Cupertino has retired its compact Apple iPhone 13 mini form factor. Our list of the best compact smartphones provides a nice overview of the current situation. The newest device to make it to this list is the Asus Zenfone 10, which is not only compact but also technically quite capable. It features Qualcomm's latest and fastest Snapdragon processor, which can sometimes get quite nasty when it heats up the aluminum chassis when under load, and a 5.9-inch AMOLED screen that also has a decent refresh rate. At the back, we find a relatively unspectacular-looking dual camera that takes excellent photos during the day and at night, of which the 6-axis gimbal is responsible for such results. What's great about this handset?

It's unclear how big the demand is these days for sub-6-inch phones. But I'm more certain of the fact that the Zenfone 10 has pretty effectively cornered it. It's hard to find anything comparable for a phone this size. The next smallest Android phones we'd recommend would be the 6.1-inch Google Pixel 7a or basic Samsung Galaxy S23, or perhaps the Galaxy Z Flip 4 since that foldable device can close up small when needed. But while these phones at least match the Zenfone in most areas, they're either more expensive, not as powerful or not as power efficient. Unless you prioritize photo quality more than compactness, the Zenfone comes out on top against all of these devices.

I might not personally be a fan of its design, but the Asus Zenfone 10 is a solid smartphone for the money – especially for those sick of giant 6.8-inch displays on smartphones. It’s not nearly as compact as Asus might have you believe, measuring in not much smaller than an iPhone 14 Pro, but the 5.9-inch AMOLED display is at least easy enough to use one-handed. There’s also some cool camera tech on offer, including a new six-axis gimbal stabilisation system that helps reduce blur in both photos and videos, and it makes taking long-exposure shots much easier, negating the need for a tripod. It’s just a shame that the core camera tech is near-identical to its predecessor, meaning there’s no real upgrade to camera quality compared to the Zenfone 9.

After spending a good amount of time living with the Zenfone 10 as my everyday phone, the lasting impression I'm left with is one of a phone that easily slots into life with minimal fuss but also does a lot of stuff really well. It doesn't come with a lot of the caveats you usually have to put up with to have a small phone. There's no "but the battery's rubbish" or "but it's not very powerful" or "but it hasn't got a very good display". It ticks all the right boxes and does it in a phone that's compact, practically designed, and a pleasure to use thanks to the option of using stock Android software. No phone is perfect, and that's certainly true of the Zenfone 10 with its slightly disappointing ultrawide camera. And - to some - the texture and material of the back might just put you off. But if you're in the market for a flagship-powered phone that isn't the size of a house brick, this is the one I'd recommend to most people who don't have the budget to cough up the extra money for the Galaxy S23.

If you want the best phone around for one-handed use, the Zenfone 10 is it. From the compact size to Asus’s software optimisations, it’s a pocket powerhouse that’s low on compromises. The phone’s weakest area is its camera – specifically occasional glitches with colour processing and low-light photography, and that says something as the camera isn’t bad at all. In fact, it’s good and a marked improvement over the Zenfone 9 – no small feat considering there’s no new hardware here. If you want a big screen for gaming and watching, the obvious alternative is the superb OnePlus 11 – a similarly specced and priced phone with a considerable bump in size. For anyone after excellent performance, features, sound credentials and internals at a reasonable price in the smallest package possible, though, nothing can touch the Zenfone 10.

Like any retail purchase, this fully depends on your needs. For me, the answer is a resounding yes, as I wish there were even more small phones on the market. I'm nostalgic for the days when tech kept shrinking, and while I'm normally using a giant device like the ROG phones, this reprieve using the Zenfone 10 is an absolute breath of fresh air. I'm now more reminded than ever that there used to be a time when my phone wasn't the absolute center of attention, demanding it with its size in my pockets. Using the Zenfone 10, I have to keep checking if it's even in my pocket. That's how light it is, and I absolutely love it. Just know what you're getting into before you buy. Large hands will have trouble typing, gamers won't see as much detail on such a small screen, and you surely won't want to perform demanding work on the thing like you would on something larger.

I started out this review talking about how ASUS makes niche smartphones, and you really can’t get much more niche than a compact phone. The Zenfone 10 is great, however, it’s size is going to make sure it is not a best-seller. Most want a larger screen, not a smaller one. But for those of us that want a smaller phone, this is going to be perfect, since it does not sacrifice anything.

Asus hasn’t gone mad with updates over the Zenfone 9. It has the latest Snapdragon chip, more megapixels on the selfie camera, version 2.0 of the gimbal, and introduced wireless charging. It is the ideal companion device to the massive, powerful, and pretty crazy ROG Phone 7 in Asus’s range, but looked at in isolation, it struggles to find its place. It’s competent, pretty, and powerful, but there’s not much that makes it really special. The size and weight are consistent with its main competition, which aren’t really thought of as “compact” phones at all, and anyone missing the 5-inch Sony XZ2 Compact will still find it too big. Wireless charging certainly isn’t a reason to get excited, which leaves the gimbal camera as the top (only?) technical reason to choose the Zenfone 10 over any other phone.

The Zenfone 10 continues in the footsteps of the 8 and the 9 and brings heaps of performance into an easily pocketable package. Its small size doesn't get in the way of achieving excellent battery life, the Snapdragon chip isn't all too bothered by the compact body, and there was room for the usual headphone jack, but also for the addition of wireless charging. All that is great, but there's just not a whole lot of new stuff about the Zenfone 10, and some of the new stuff rubs us the wrong way. We're not entirely sure that the gaming-only 144Hz refresh rate on the display counts, and we most definitely aren't thrilled about having to change the camera section heading from 'AF all around' to 'AF gone'. And while allowances can be made for the absence of a zoom camera on a phone that small, that argument wears thin next to competitors with proper triple-cam setups.

The Asus Zenfone 10 is basically everything the iPhone mini should have been. Pocketable and powerful, while still offering marathon battery life. Not only is the size appealing, but it offers unique and colorful styling that is almost as rare as a small flagship phone in 2023. While I wish Asus had more thoroughly nailed the entire camera experience, the primary camera and selfie cameras are good enough, that I think most users will be satisfied, despite the disappointing ultra-wide and lack of a telephoto lens. The only outstanding question on the Asus Zenfone 10 is the cost, but if Asus brings it in at around the same $699 as its predecessor, this is going to be an easy pick for one of the best phones of 2023. If you need a phone right now or don’t want to spend over $500, the Google Pixel 7a is the clear alternative, but if you value performance and battery life over cameras, you’ll want to wait for the Zenfone 10.

The Asus Zenfone 10 isn’t just the most powerful compact model on the market right now. It’s one of the most powerful Android mobiles on the market altogether – and in terms of speed, it’s on par with the best from Samsung, Xiaomi and OnePlus. At the same time, the Zenfone 10 has the best image stabilisation of any phone, paired with a pretty good camera section. Despite all these advantages, it’s unlikely to change Asus’ position as a niche manufacturer. The brand loyalty of mobile phone buyers is too strong for that. But if you need a mobile phone that fits in a normal pocket and can take pictures under really difficult conditions, it’s impossible to ignore. If you already have a Zenfone 9, you can safely skip the Zenfone 10. There are small improvements and the speed is 15-20 per cent faster. But it’s not a revolution. Better wait until next year, when we might hope that Asus may give us a telephoto lens.

The Asus Zenfone 10 is a triumph. Forget the smaller size for a second – this is every bit the flagship phone. Sure, the camera is a little underwhelming compared to the best on the market, but it's still more than enough for all but the most hardcore of power-users. The video performance more than makes up for it, too. If you enjoy taking videos – particularly while on the move – I can't think of a single device which outshines this. It's effortless to use and the results are really beautiful. The main appeal here is that smaller format, though. For a long time, users looking for a flagship device in a small size have been forced to compromise on something. The Zenfone 10 means that's no longer the case.

We're very pleased that, despite all the rumors, Asus decided to stick with the compact idea for the Zenfone 10. Some leaks suggested that the company was going to scrap the "small flagship" philosophy and go bigger. Fortunately, we have our next compact flagship, and even though some people might call it the Zenfone 9S or 9.5, it's still one of the best compact Android phones on the market. The camera situation is probably the most disappointing one, robbing the Zenfone 10 of a perfect score. Sticking with more or less the same hardware weighs the Zenfone 10 down when other manufacturers move rapidly forward in this department. That being said, the gimbal stabilization onboard is still one of the best on the market, and adding Adaptive mode allows people to produce amazing videos in almost every possible scenario.

Reviewing the Asus Zenfone 10 after two weeks, with an unboxing, full camera verdict, gaming performance and battery life. The Asus Zenfone 10 is one of the best phones of 2023, hot competition vs the Pixel 7 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra etc - and my favourite mini smartphone. Here in the UK, that price starts from £749 although you can pre-order and get £50 off. Bargain! The Zenfone 10’s weakest feature is that camera tech, which is good but not as dependable as the Pixel or Galaxy. Low light is more of a struggle and at the moment this phone has focus issues, something that'll hopefully be sorted in an update.

The big reason to have your eye on the ASUS Zenfone 10 is, ironically, its small stature. With a compact 5.92-inch 120Hz FHD+ display, this is a small flagship Android phone built in the guise of the regular Apple iPhone 14, Samsung Galaxy S23, and Google Pixel 7 rather than their gargantuan powerhouse siblings. Still, the ASUS Zenfone 10 doesn’t leave us wanting for high-end features. An IP68 rating and solid-sounding speakers are a staple of ASUS’ setup, while 15W Qi wireless charging is a new addition to the series this year. There’s even a headphone jack; a feature long absent from its aforementioned rivals. Performance is rock solid thanks to a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, healthy 16GB RAM, and ample 512GB storage on the model I tested. The handset also comes in 8GB/126GB and 8GB/256GB memory options too.

Qualcomm Adreno 740: Graphics chip for smartphones and tablets that is integrated within the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. Qualcomm claims that it is 25% faster than the Adreno 730 in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and first benchmarks show that the GPU can beat the Apple A16 iGPU (previously the fastest smartphone GPU).
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

SD 8 Gen 2: High-end SoC for smartphones that was introduced in late 2022 with a fast prime core based on a ARM Cortex-X3 architecture clocked at up to 3.2 GHz. Two more performance cores are based on the A715 and also support only 64 bit applications. The two additional A710 cores support also 32 bit applications as do the power saving Cortex-A510 cores. In addition to the processor cores, the SoC integrates a WiFi 7 modem, a Hexagon DSP (for AI acceleration) and a Spectra ISP. The integrated memory controller supports fast LPDDR5x memory with up to 4,200 MHz. 5G is included in the chip with the Snapdragon X70 modem.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
