Back in March, the somewhat reliable Xperia leaker Zackbuks posted a disheartening comment on Weibo about Sony’s modern compact smartphone line, the Xperia 5 series. The post simply read “Xperia 5 Series R.I.P. 2024”, leading some to believe that Sony was shrinking the Xperia line. However, it appears that particular demise is not a permanent one, with Sony simply having to skip the Xperia 5 VI while aiming for the release of the Xperia 5 VII model in 2025.
This information comes from a sketchy source on Weibo (reported via SumahoDigest) that says “Sony has not discontinued its compact flagship product” (machine translation) and that a shortage of display panels was to blame for the supposed cancellation of the Sony Xperia 5 VI. The translated post continues to affirm that Sony will release a compact smartphone next year, which may be called the Xperia 5 VII.
A pinch of salt is certainly required here, as we have already reported on a few purported leaks about the Sony Xperia 5 VI, including one concerning protective cases for the device. If Sony does plan on releasing its compact smartphone this year, more detailed leaks should start appearing soon, such as those about specifications and camera equipment, as the Xperia 5 (Mark 5 model available on Amazon) is usually released in September or early October.
