The Sony Xperia 1 VI possesses one of the most unusual camera setups of any smartphone on the market, including a periscope telephoto camera with continuous zoom. A first teardown video now shows the cameras and new features of the flagship in detail.

The Sony Xperia 1 VI is available in the US via Amazon for at least $1,065. In addition to the usual high-end features such as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the fast 120 Hz OLED display and the 5,000 mAh battery, the flagship also has an unusual camera setup.

This is because Sony complements the 48 MP f/1.9 main camera (with a 1/1.35 inch sensor) with a 12 MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera and, above all, a 12 MP periscope telephoto camera with a 1/3.5 inch sensor, which can continuously zoom from a 35 mm equivalent focal length of 85 - 170 mm, allowing Sony to implement 3.5x to 7.1x optical zoom. WekiHome has now been able to disassemble the flagship in a teardown video (embedded below) and compare it with its direct predecessor.

At first glance, the telephoto camera in particular catches our attention, which is significantly larger than on the Xperia 1 V, whose camera could "only" zoom from 85 - 125 mm. Otherwise, the layout of the smartphone has hardly changed. There are a few interesting upgrades in the details, such as the faster UFS 4.0 memory chips from Micron.

The battery has a comparatively high energy density of 790Wh/l, which allows Sony to maintain the capacity of 5,000 mAh, but saves valuable millimetres inside the housing, which are utilized for the larger telephoto camera. The smartphone has a relatively modular design: only the ultra-wide-angle and main camera cannot be replaced independently of each other, and to replace the USB-C port, the battery has to be removed from the casing, which makes maintenance and potential repairs unnecessarily time-consuming.
