Sony has now duly delivered on replacing the WH-1000XM5 with its first sixth-generation release in its 1000X series. As yesterday's last-minute leak highlighted, Sony has decided to offer its latest pair of over-ear headphones in Black, Midnight Blue and Platinum Silver colourways. On top of that, the WH-1000X series has returned to a foldable design, which Sony abandoned for one generation with the WH-1000XM5 (curr. $348 on Amazon).
Sony claims to have reinforced its hinge mechanism this time around, presumably after receiving reports of hinge issues on the XM5s. The company has included a wider headband this time around to reduce pressure when wearing the WH-1000XM6 for extended periods. Apparently, softer earpads should help in this regard, too.
Meanwhile, the WH-1000XM6 showcases Sony's QN3 processor, which it claims can process data up to seven times faster than the QN1 inside the WH-1000XM5. Combined with a total of twelve microphones, the QN3 should help deliver improved active noise cancellation (ANC) and transparency modes, albeit by unquantified levels.
On top of that, the WH-1000XM6 features upgraded 30 mm drivers to provide refined high-frequency reproduction and vocal clarity. The new headphones boast up to 30 hours of battery life too, with new fast charging on hand to generate 3 hours of music playback from a mere 3 minutes spent at the wall. The WH-1000XM6 is available to order today for $449.99 from Sony and retailers like Amazon or Best Buy, with shipments set for later this week. Please see Sony's website for more details.
