Sony is preparing to unveil the WH-1000XM6 later today as replacements for the WH-1000XM5 with a three-year gap between releases. While the company initially revealed precious little about today's product announcement, it teased earlier this week that 'Chapter 6' was on the horizon. Then last night, Sony was spotted adding WH-1000XM6 to several of its websites with pricing, colours and shipment dates.
Typically, Sony offers a single 1000X series refresh annually. However, there were suggestions last year that the WH-1000XM6 will be joined by the WF-1000XM6 this year, which would be in line with WF-1000X release cycles. Although the WF-1000XM6 has not emerged during recent WH-1000XM6 leaks, The Walkman Blog has received evidence that Sony recently added WF-1000XM6 references to its Sound Connect app before swiftly removing them.
Nonetheless, the website managed to grab a screenshot of these references, which we have embedded below. Not only did Sony directly mention 'WF-1000XM6', but it also linked the earbuds' retail name to the model number 'YY2985'. On the one hand, this appearance suggests that Sony plans to release the WF-1000XM6 later this year, possibly over the summer or early autumn. On the other hand, the lack of certifications or retail leaks implies that the WF-1000XM5 will be around for a while yet (curr. $179.99 on Amazon).
