Sony is still expected to complement the WH-1000XM6 with the in-ear WF-1000XM6 before the end of the year. Based on new leaks, the company plans to offer its next WF-1000X earbuds in smaller retail packaging this time around, despite the comparatively small retail box of the current WF-1000XM5.

The Walkman Blog has discovered new references to the WF-1000XM6, just over two weeks after it previously posted about Sony's next pair of high-end wireless earbuds. Incidentally, the new disclosure arrives in the wake of a mysterious new pair of Sony over-ear wireless headphones surfacing, as well as major new updates for the existing WH-1000XM6 and WF-1000XM5 (curr. $149.99 - refurbished on Amazon).

Now, the website has revealed new import filings that shed more light on the WF-1000XM6. According to The Walkman Blog, their previous leak originated in mid-March or about two months before the date of the latest import filing it has now posted. Given that the WH-1000XM6 experienced similar leaks a few months before its eventual launch, it seems that the WF-1000XM6 is on track for an official release before the end of the year.

The latest batch of leaks indicate that Sony had started shipping Engineering Validation Test (EVT) prototypes for further testing by May. In other words, we are likely only a few months away from seeing more substantive leaks courtesy of Design Validation Test (DVT) prototypes that Sony will submit to regulatory bodies like the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US.

It is worth stressing that Sony will then move to Production Validation Test (PVT) units before mass producing initial WF-1000XM6 batches. Nonetheless, current leaks suggest that Sony intends to offer the WF-1000XM6 in smaller packaging than its predecessor. While this packaging is set to measure 84 x 70 x 55 mm, this does not necessarily mean that Sony will shrink the size of its WF-1000X earbuds between generations.
