Sony PlayStation 5 Slim now available for purchase
The Sony PlayStation 5 Slim with a disk drive can now be ordered from PlayStation Direct for USD 499.99. Sony is henceforth officially branding the new consoles as "Slim" for the first time, after the new revisions were previously simply marketed as PlayStation 5.
At these prices, a purchase is only worthwhile if the smaller case is a must, as Sony also offers the older revision as part of a bundle for the same price ($499.99). The disk model of the PS5 Slim measures 35.8 x 21.6 x 9.6 centimeters, thus reducing the height, width and length by 3 cm, 4 cm and 1 cm, respectively. The Digital Edition is even thinner at 8 centimeters.
For an extra $50, buyers of the newer revision get a second USB-C port on the front, which replaces the USB-A port of the previous model. However, all other specs are identical, so nothing changes in terms of performance. Unlike the older console, the vertical stand for the PS5 Slim must be purchased separately, which costs $29.99.
On the other hand, those who buy the Digital Edition have the advantage with the Slim revision that the disk drive can be retrofitted, which was previously not possible. The storage can be expanded with a PCIe 4.0 SSD, such as a SHARKSPEED SSD M.2 NVMe 4 TB, which costs around $339 on Amazon.
