The Asus ROG Ally is a powerful gaming handheld that also impressed in our review. As a gaming handheld, it is, in absolute terms, a very compact system with a powerful processor, so the aspect of cooling is anything but trivial. HandheldDIY is currently offering a mod case for the ROG Ally as part of an Indiegogo campaign, which is said to offer significantly better cooling than the standard case.
The replacement case is provided with numerous openings through which the waste heat can escape from the housing more effectively. Heat dissipation should be particularly efficient thanks to a heat spreader and the corresponding cooling pads. According to the manufacturer, the Modcase is intended to reduce the temperature of the ROG Ally both under full load and moderate load. This should have a positive impact on computing load: the Cinebench R23 score shows a 15% increase in Performance mode, which is a significant increase and, depending on the game, could mean the difference between moderate and good playability.
The Modcase also comes with a small, foldable stand. An additional battery should be particularly easy to use and secure thanks to a silicone strap. A customizable, removable nameplate can also be ordered. As part of the crowdfunding campaign, the manufacturer is also offering several accessories such as Hall joysticks with two different characteristics, but also alternative additional buttons. The modcase itself is currently priced at around USD 29 and delivery is scheduled to begin next month. The usual financial risks for crowdfunding apply.
