Even high-quality flashlights struggle on extremely cold winter days. A new flashlight tries to avoid this issue by utilizing a sodium-ion battery. The gadget further promises great longevity and an impressive brightness.

Lithium batteries perform best above freezing, since their voltage drops much faster at very low temperatures, which drastically reduces their runtime. A new flashlight is designed to solve this problem by using a sodium-ion battery. This battery is supposed to retain 88% of its usual runtime at -40°C, compared to just 15% with a lithium battery.

The flashlight uses a proprietary battery with a capacity of 10,000mAh that can be swapped out with just a few steps. This should not be necessary for a long time, since the manufacturer claims a lifespan of 3,000 charging cycles. Even storing the fully discharged battery is apparently harmless. Furthermore, the flashlight sports a USB-C port that can charge the battery at up to 10 watts, while a USB-A port that can supply up to 5 watts to other devices, allowing the flashlight to serve as a power bank on cold days.

The flashlight is also equipped with a 25-watt LED that provides up to 2,500 lumens. Both the beam and the color temperature are adjustable, the latter ranges from 6,000 to 8,000 Kelvin. The housing is rated IP44, which means it’s protected against rain. With dimensions of roughly 10.7 x 2.0 x 1.5 inches and a weight of about 22.6 oz, the flashlight is not particularly compact or lightweight.

Price and availability

The sodium-ion flashlight from Peng Jiang is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter. The "Super Early Bird" offer can be preordered for $56, as the price is scheduled to increase to $85 later on. This price does not include shipping or import fees. Deliveries are scheduled to arrive in March 2026. As usual with crowdfunding campaigns, it cannot be ruled out that the flashlight will be delayed or that it’s quality will not live up to the expectations.
