Qualcomm is now said to have an upcoming chipset in the works that might mimic the new top-end Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC linked to top-end Android smartphones such as the new Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra in one or a number of ways. However, the impending silicon is reportedly destined for the mid-range handsets of the future instead. Accordingly, features such as up-to-date performance (and perhaps even on-device AI) could trickle down the market faster than anticipated.

It's first Galaxy Unpacked of 2024 day - nevertheless, smartphones pitched at sub-Galaxy S24 tiers will also be capable of grabbing attention this year, according to noted tipster Digital Chat Station. The Weibo-based leaker hints that Qualcomm will launch what might be a Plus version of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 soon.

That chipset has continued the recent trend of 7-series SoCs to be reckoned with, by launching with a lot more in common with recent 4-nanometer (4nm) Snapdragon flagships than might be expected. To this end, the 7 Plus Gen 2 or 7+ Gen 2 has nearly every main CPU-related spec of the 8+ Gen 1, except that its single 'main' or performance Cortex-X2 core is slower at 2.91GHz.

Now, Qualcomm is projected to do something very similar with the "SM7675" or putative 7+ Gen 3 - except it is to skip the 8 Gen 2 series entirely in order to be based right on the new 8 Gen 3 instead. Accordingly, it could get its own 3-cluster core layout with a Cortex-X4 as its "1", and perhaps even the latest ARM v9.2 architecture.

All in all, that could add up to next-gen POCO F-series or Honor 1x0-series smartphones to be taken more seriously in 2024 or beyond - thanks to on-board AI even, perhaps.
