Samsung's new Galaxy S24 and S24+ feature moderate design updates around rather significant changes to display specs.
The whole Galaxy S24 line-up, including the S24 and S24+, now have 2X AMOLED displays with 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate for battery savings. The S24 and S24+ also have bigger batteries, with the S24 coming in at 4,000 mAh and the S24+ sporting a 4,900 mAh pack. Display brightness has also almost doubled from the S23.

At the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event today, Samsung has announced its latest generation of Galaxy Smartphones, including the Galaxy S24 and bigger Galaxy S24+. Aside from the new suite of Galaxy AI features, Samsung has made a few updates to both devices, specifically when it comes to the display and battery specifications.

Possibly the most important upgrade to the S24 and S24+ come by way of software. Both devices will launch with Android 14 and OneUI 6.1. More importantly, though, Samsung is promising seven years of Android version upgrades and security updates. Both devices also come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 For Galaxy processors, which unlock several on-device AI features thanks to a new NPU.

The Samsung Galaxy S24, which is the device with the most mainstream appeal, sees a small bump in battery size, from 3,900 mAh in the Galaxy S23 to 4,000 mAh in the S24. The display on the S24 is still a FHD+ AMOLED 2X panel, but this time it allows the refresh rate to go down to as low as 1 Hz, instead of 10 Hz, to save power. The Galaxy S24's display is also significantly brighter and slightly bigger, claiming a max brightness of 2,600 nits and a 6.2-inch diagonal measurement instead of 6.1 inches — all within the same device footprint.

The Galaxy S24+, on the other hand, sees as 200 mAh jump in battery size over the S23+, with the new version clocking in at 4,900 mAh. The display on the S24+ also sees a bigger upgrade than the regular S24, with a new QHD+ resolution instead of the FHD+ of the previous generation. The S24+'s display is also flatter — good news for those that have lamented the curved displays of previous years. The S24+'s display was also bumped up by 0.1 inches to a 6.7 inch unit.

Much of the rest of the Galaxy S24 and S24+ is the same as last year, meaning small camera improvements, although none are to the hardware, and minor design tweaks that mostly focus on being more eco-friendly and more durable, although.

Along with the launch of the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung also announced a slew of on-device AI features at Galaxy Unpacked. Samsung calls these features Galaxy AI, and while some of them seem to be old features with a new lick of paint, others include an AI assistant in the messaging app and AI-powered generative image editing. For a full run-down of the Galaxy AI features, head over to our launch coverage of the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24+ will be available in the following storage and RAM configurations:

  • Samsung Galaxy S24: 8 GB RAM across all versions, with 128 GB ($799.99) and 256 GB ($859.99) storage options
  • Samsung Galaxy S24+: 12 GB RAM across all versions, with 256 GB ($999.99) and 512 GB ($1119.99) storage options.

Neither device has room for a microSD card for extra storage, but that's hardly a surprise these days.

You can already pre-order the Samsung Galaxy S24 and Samsung Galaxy S24+ from Amazon. Samsung is also offering pre-orderers a deal that doubles the device storage at no extra cost, meaning the 512 GB S24+ is available for $999.99.
