Samsung responds to foldable iPhone Ultra with new "Galaxy Z TriFold Wide" patent

After the original Galaxy Z TriFold launched in early 2026, Samsung officially discontinued the $2,899 device in March. Weirdly enough, due to massive demand and units reselling for over $5,000, the company recently brought it back for limited restocks.
Now, a new patent suggests Samsung is already working on a more practical successor - the alleged Galaxy Z TriFold Wide.
Galaxy Z TriFold Wide might be on the way; Samsung not giving up on the trifold design just yet
This new patent shows a TriFold that is shorter and wider. By changing the dimensions, the device would feel like a wider smartphone when closed but transform into a media-oriented tablet when fully opened. This "wide" philosophy matches the rumors surrounding the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, suggesting Samsung wants its future foldables to feel… different.
Despite the eye-watering $2,899 price tag, the first TriFold sold out in minutes every time inventory hit the shelves. While Samsung reportedly lost money on each unit due to complex manufacturing, the sheer interest from "deep-pocketed" enthusiasts proves there is a market for ultra-premium multi-folds. If the Z Fold 8 Wide is a success, this TriFold Wide could be the next logical step for mass production.

Global competition in the foldable market is heating up, fueled by the upcoming iPhone Fold/Ultra
Samsung isn't alone in the race for wider screens. Huawei recently stole the spotlight with the Pura X Max, a wide-format foldable that beats Samsung to the punch by ditching the tall-and-narrow design entirely.
Meanwhile, Apple is finally expected to enter the foldable ring in late 2026. Rumors suggest an iPhone Fold (or Ultra) is coming with a titanium frame and a focus on a "crease-free" display. As the market shifts toward wider aspect ratios, Samsung’s latest patent shows the South Korean giant isn't willing to give up their lead in the foldable race just yet.
