Samsung makes its "Awesome" new Galaxy A52 and A72 smartphones official
Today (March 17 , 2021), Samsung has finally unveiled the successors to the Galaxy A51 and A71. As predicted earlier, there are actually 3 new phones to meet here: the A52 has both 4G/LTE and 5G variants. Then again, it is not easy to tell which is which, as the OEM has graced them with the same central punch-hole display, as well as the same rear camera module (with 4 sensors apiece), color-matched to the rest of their rear panels in the same 4 "Awesome" colors (Black, Blue, White and Violet).
However, the A72 sets itself apart with a 6.7-inch AMOLED display, whereas the A52s get 6.5-inch HD+ screens. The only 5G model has 120Hz refresh rates, whereas the A52 and A72 make do with 90Hz. The A52s and A72 also share maximal 800-nit brightness levels and SGS eye-care ratings for their displays. They also have stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, IP67 ingress-protection and "2-day" battery life in common.
The A72 does differ in that it gets an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto lens for its rear camera array, replaced by a 5MP depth sensor in the A52s. Its 64MP main sensor also has a 3x optical zoom function, whereas that of the A52 series only has "hi-res" auto-focus (AF) optical image stabilizaton (OIS). Otherwise, 12MP ultra-wide lenses and 5MP macro shooters are constant across the 3 new devices.
Samsung also asserts that the A52, A52 5G and A72 come with the most important aspects of One UI, including Knox security, full Galaxy Buds compatibility and SmartThings integrations (for accessories such as the new Galaxy SmartTags). Finally, the new mid-tier phones have the microSD card support and headphone jacks absent in the flagship S21 line.
The Galaxy A52 4G/LTE has 4 to 8GB of RAM with 128 or 256GB of internal storage, whereas its 5G counterpart and the A72 have 6 or 8GB of RAM and the same storage options. The former starts at €349 (~US$415), or €429 (~$510) for the Galaxy A52 5G, whereas the Galaxy A72's base model is set at €449 (~$534).
