As the current market leader, Samsung doesn't seem to feel much pressure and only introduced some minor upgrades to its latest flagship phone. Is the significantly improved Galaxy AI enough reason to upgrade to the S25 Ultra?

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra is the successor to the S24 Ultra and offers some improvements in addition to a more powerful processor. The design remains largely unchanged, but the titanium chassis is now lighter and slightly slimmer. The smartphone is available in three storage sizes and seven color variants, but the 16GB/1TB model is not available in all markets. Meanwhile, the S Pen has lost its Bluetooth connectivity and some features along the way.

A key upgrade is Samsung’s software. With One UI 7.0 and Galaxy AI, numerous AI-powered features have been improved. For instance, AI Agents allow for more natural interactions while AI Select gives context-related recommendations. Furthermore, users can now specifically search for images via voice command or receive personalized recommendations. Samsung promises to keep the Galaxy S25 Ultra software up to date until 2032.

The remaining feature set includes Bluetooth 5.4, WiFi 7, NFC, UWB, and USB 3.2 with video output to an external display. Call and reception quality remains high, and the European model variant supports physical Dual-SIM as well as eSIM. Moreover, Samsung relies on a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X with QHD+ resolution and 120Hz LTPO technology. While the screen’s peak brightness has been slightly reduced, its color reproduction actually improved. The new Gorilla Armor 2 glass fights reflections more efficiently and should be tougher.

The camera hardware remains largely unchanged. The 200MP main camera uses pixel binning, while the ultra-wide-angle sensor has been improved. Zoom quality is still excellent, especially with the 5x optical zoom. Video recordings benefit from software improvements such as the Audio Eraser for noise reduction and Nightography mode for better night shots.

Is that enough to justify the purchase? Not for Galaxy S24 Ultra owners, in our opinion. The hardware differences are minor and many new features will become available on last year’s flagship via a corresponding software update in the near future. On the other hand, anyone who owns an S22 Ultra or older Samsung smartphone will likely be quite satisfied with this upgrade.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra can be ordered directly at Samsung’s official online shop, which is the only place where three exclusive color variants are being offered. The Samsung smartphone is also available at many notable mobile carriers and major retailers, including Amazon and Best Buy.
