Over the last few days, an increasing number of reports on Samsung’s community forum and on X have claimed that the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra (from $1,106 on Amazon) is currently having major problems with moon pictures. This issue apparently only affects users who have installed the latest beta version of One UI 8, which is based on Android 16. As the photos in the embedded X post below illustrate, the moon is being rendered in a pink color.
Oddly enough, the color is apparently displayed correctly in the camera app's preview. Once the photo is taken and saved, the moon will show up with the wrong color. This indicates a problem with the white balance during final image processing. Cameras typically adjust the white balance to correct a green or pink tint, if this correction is not working properly, images can turn either green or pink.
Since the problem was noticed during the beta test of One UI 8, Samsung can hopefully fix the bug before the final version of One UI 8 is being released to the public. The OS update is expected to hit the Samsung Galaxy S25 series in September. This is not the first time that Samsung smartphones have had issues with pictures of the moon. Back in 2023, Samsung was criticized for using artificial intelligence to "enhance" moon photos so heavily that, in many cases, they had little in common with the actual moon that was photographed.
