The excruciatingly long road to the release of GIMP 3.0, along with its revolutionary new non-destructive editing features, is finally drawing to a close. The GIMP development team has announced that it only has eight bugs reports left to resolve before the first release candidate goes live.

It looks like anyone anticipating the launch of GIMP 3.0 doesn't have much longer to wait, at least if one of GIMP's official maintainers' recent X update is anything to go by. According to @zemarmot on X, the GIMP 3.0 team only has eight bug reports out of 350 left to squash before the RC1 (first release candidate) is ready for launch.

If this is any indication, there are likely only a few bugs left to squash before the official release, indicating that it should only be a few weeks before the GIMP 3.0 Release Candidate 1 drops. Judging by an official GIMP 3.0 development update, it looks like the team has had their hands full both implementing and perfecting new features and taking care of bugs, including ones that have been issues since the release of GIMP 2.10.

We previously reported on the plethora of new features, but the highlights are:

  • Vastly improved colour handling
  • Improved user interface with better scaling
  • Photoshop-like non-destructive editing
  • An improved selection stroke (aka outline) tool
  • Responsive layer resizing
  • Improved font management

The bulk of the recent work leading up to the 3.0 release seems to have been on more technical aspects, like colour management, scripting features, libraries, the GIMP API, and the plugin creation GUI. There have also been significant updates to GIMP's documentation, the new design library and UI, and the welcome screen, both of which should make the image editor far more beginner-friendly and easy to use.

If you're looking to get started in the world of digital art, consider getting something like a Huion Kamvas Pro 13 pen display (curr. $299 on Amazon).
