Raid Shadow Legends developer Plarium sold to Modern Times for $820 million
Although its PC port available on Steam has failed to hit a mere 1,100 concurrent players so far, Raid: Shadow Legends is doing pretty well overall, with most estimates mentioning around 10 million monthly players and around one million accounts that are being accessed in a day. Plarium Global Ltd., the game's developer, has over 20 games in its portfolio, including the Stormfall franchise, Lost Island: Blast Adventure, Mech Arena, and more. Its owner, Australian poker machine giant Aristocrat Leisure, has just sold Plarium to $820 million to Modern Times, a Swedish digital entertainment company.
Modern Times is based in Stockholm and deeply involved in the esports world. In 2015, the group acquired a 74% stake in Turtle Entertainment, which owns the Electronic Sports League (ESL) brand. Before 2016 arrived, top esports tournament organizer DreamHack switched hands and joined Modern Times' portfolio. In the following years, Modern Times became involved in the German game developer InnoGames and US-based publisher Kongregate as well.
According to a statement quoted by Reuters, Plarium's acquisition fits well with Modern Times, "and the deal results in one of the strongest mid-core mobile gaming portfolios in the industry." The resulting combined force should generate over $1.1 billion in annual revenue for Modern Times, while Aristocrat Leisure is completing the assessment of its casual and mid-core gaming portfolio's results.
