The new Hyper Boost technology presented at an event in Shanghai, China is Oppo’s answer to Huawei’s GPU Turbo – a similar accelerator that was launched this summer. Oppo claims that its Hyper Boost alternative can overclock CPU and GPU frequencies 100 times faster than the Android kernel, and the company already provides exclusive support for specific mobile games.
Oppo partnered up with Tencent, NetEase, Unity and Epic Games in order to make the Hyper Boost technology compatible with the most popular mobile games and applications. Games like PUBG and Honor of Kings will benefit from the “polymorphic network acceleration technology” combined with the “intelligent distribution of traffic between cellular and Wi-Fi data network channels.” Moreover, social media apps like WeChat, Taobao, and QQ will work faster thanks to a database with predetermined usage scenarios.
The Hyper Boost accelerator includes a Behaviour Aware Scheduling function that can overclock the CPUs and GPU of popular Qualcomm and MediaTek SoCs in just 0.2 milliseconds, which is 100 times faster than the current Android Linux kernel. This also allows the OS itself to perform 31.91% faster in many day-to-day scenarios.
It is still unclear if this feature can be retroactively enabled in previous Oppo handhelds; however, the R17 smartphones are the first ones to fully integrate the Hyper Boost tech, and most of Oppo’s future models will get it as well.
